"I thought I was alone."
The words, heavy with pain, weighed down with their long suffering and inescapable truth, fell from his lips as the cold, ocean water splashed around. Erik nearly looked away into the darkness surrounding them, ashamed to have said such a thing out loud, but then Charles spoke.
"You're not alone." And it wasn't so much the words, though they were beautiful to acknowledge, but more their unfathomable implication. "Erik, you are not alone."
They were a promise. Possessing a certainty which could not - would not ever - be denied.
That memory, so long ago as it was, seems so close within Erik's reach. He can practically smell the ocean air, he can see with such clarity the pale blue of Charles' eyes, the concern in his brow...
He blinks away the image because it's counterpart is never far behind. When he relishes in their first meeting a moment too long, he sees their final and most painful one as well. Today, he does not wish to think about what the Phoenix did to them all.
A soft wind blows through his now whitened hair as he sits on his usual narrow bench in the park. Everyday he comes and everyday he waits for Charles to show up one day and play chess with him again. It is something Erik cannot explain, but when he moves a chess piece without touching it, he knows Charles' words - "You're not alone" - haunt him because they still hold true.
