The formerly satisfying taste turned bitter in her mouth when he walked in through the coffee shop doors. The only other patron happened to finish his latte at that moment, leaving his table to go outside.
Because of her position, Waller had worked with many people she did not like very much, but him, him she really disliked. Always had, always would. However, there was no point for him to know it, so she forced down another mouthful of the damned drink in her hand. By the time she placed her cup back on the table, he was sitting in the once empty chair across from her. She did not bother looking up from the morning paper.
“What is it?” she asked, cutting to the chase. It’s not that she didn’t know how to be polite-she’d been so to Hammond and look where that got her. No, she was simply done wasting time.
“Oh, I think you know,” he replied with that cocky, self-assured tone of his. She didn’t care for it anymore than she cared for him.
“It’s under control,” she replied and realized immediately it was the wrong thing to say.
“Is it, now?” Fury chuckled, “Because your man nearly choked.”
Waller looked up then. There was no need for words, her eyes said it all. So much so that the petite redhead standing guard outside, whose name implied just how deadly she was, turned towards them.
“But don’t worry,” he continued, “We were ready to step in.”
“Coastal City,” she said as a reminder and reached for her cup.
“Yes.” He nodded as if to a child. Waller wanted nothing more than to reach over, slam his face on the table, and walk out. She took another sip instead. Fury continued, “Coastal City, Metropolis, Gotham, the others, we know the deal.”
“Good.”
He leaned forward. “But we also know we’re not letting people die because you can’t get your shit together.”
Thoughts of the Kansas boy and the Amazon trying to pass unnoticed crossed her mind. She didn’t let on.
“Now, listen here-”
“Amanda, there’s no need to fight,” he smiled again and sat back in his chair, “We are on the same side.” The redhead was suddenly at the door, eyes assessing the situation. Fury stood. “This was fun. We should do it again.”
“Yes, we should. Next week I’ll be in Arizona,” she added and she saw it then. It flashed across Fury’s face for a split second then it was gone. But that it had been there at all was all that mattered. “I’ll find you there, I’m sure.” She didn’t wait for him to leave before turning away, instead she drank her coffee again and it was delicious.
