After pure laziness in getting a repair man out, the great washing repair god has decided to bless me and I have successfully managed a load of laundry. Thanks to various suggestions from friends, I finally found a magic combination of: pull out plug (turn on water, still runs, damn, turn off water), wait a minute, cycle the washer to empty out everything (and reset the solenoid), turn on water (yea! doesn't run) then wash. Magic - all is working again.
I'm afraid to simply start a load and leave the house, but if I hang out nearby so I can hear the warning beep things may be fine. I now have a set of clean sheets (my current ones were getting ready to stand up and run away - having a dog who likes to lay in the dirt takes its toll).
Life is good.
I needed it after a slightly crabby evening after a "talk" with a friend about the fact that sharing some specific types of personal information (e.g. those things that he might know from a day when my defenses are low but are not close to public knowledge) with his new girlfriend was unacceptable.
