Personality; John is your everyday nice guy. He doesn't seem to have a mean bone in his body. He greets everyone cheerfully and in a friendly manner. His core personality trait is that he's just a nice guy and all three of his friends mention this quality about him at some point in the comic. It's a notable trait because it also tends to get him into trouble. John is a bit of a goof. He makes bad jokes and uses off-beat and subtle irony to make humor out of even the most dire situations. He likes humor a like, citing himself to be a "master prankster" who is only ever out pranked by his equally goofy father. John plays several pranks throughout his canon. He puts a bucket on Rose's door so that when she opens it it falls on her head. He pranks Karkat several times, telling him false information in the future so that it confuses him during past conversations. He tricks Kanaya into thinking he's Rose when he talks to her under her Pesterchum Handle. The list goes on.

In addition, John's goofiness extends into his interests. He comes off as a typical "nerd" with a love of video games, bad movies, web comics, magic tricks and paranormal lore. He also likes programming but he isn't very good at it. Still, he never stops programming for fun which shows a sense of determination and overall optimistic attitude in the boy. He doesn't give in easily and has a tendency to keep trying by coming up with all sorts of plans until something works and the problem is solved. This usually doesn't end well for him as most of his ideas tend to be bad. Out of all John's hobbies, however, his favorite is bad movies. He unironically loves them. They influence his behavior by causing him to do some very silly things. He tends to love reenacting scenes from his bad movies, most notably the scenes in Con Air. (That's his favorite.) He loves Nic Cage and a handful of other notably bad actors. He idolizes them on a near fanboy like level. This shows that John is a very enthusiastic guy. He gets excited about things while at the same time remaining relatively passive. He tends to follow commands and do what he's told by others, usually without question even if the command isn't very logical.

This leads back to John's good guy nature getting him into trouble. The problem with it is that John is very gullible at times. He trusts the commands he's given, a personality trait that has led John straight to his death. Twice. The first time permanently when Terezi tells him to skip through to the Seventh Gate and fight his Denizen. The Denizen kills him, creating a doomed timeline. It's John's death that brings Dave from the doomed timeline to the Alpha Timeline and causes the creation of Davesprite, who then prevents the same thing from happening a second time. The second time John is duped into being killed by Jack on his Quest Bed by Vriska. Although this ascends him to God Tier the basic trait remains: John just does what he's told. He didn't question Vriska or Terezi very much when they were ordering him around. This quirk also backfires on him when he refuses to believe Davesprite's warning about not listening to Terezi. John initially brushes his "I'm Dave from the future." comment as Dave messing with him but later reconsiders and prevents the Alpha Timeline from following the same path as the doomed one did. Thus John's ability to be gullible is somewhat two-fold: he can be easily tricked and then hard to convince he isn't being tricked.

However John isn't shallow or easily pushed around. He out right rejects commands from the narration to "shit on his dad's desk" and refuses another command that tells him to eat cake. He rejects the latter so hard he can be seen flipping off the "audience" in outrage. This brings up another aspect of John's personality. For all his nice guy and generally good natured self, John is still a thirteen year old boy. He can be somewhat of an asshole, offering sarcastic remarks and snappy comebacks when annoyed. Unlike the more vitriol Dave, however, John is generally not mean-spirited in these remarks. He never means the rude things he says and doesn't often hold that tone very long. He just likes to "play rough" sometimes, figuratively speaking. John does have his moments though, generally when he talks to Dave, Karkat (in the early stages), Terezi or anyone else he thinks is just harassing him.

It's important to note that John's opinions of other people is very high. He believes everyone to be genuine and good. He doesn't even blame Terezi or Vriska for his deaths. He seems incapable of it and actually becomes really good friends with Vriska as the story progresses. It isn't in John's nature to hate or blame others. He wants to trust everyone no matter what and so he does just that without thinking much of the consequences. He gives people the benefit of the doubt. John hides nothing and pretty much wears his heart on his sleeve. He isn't hard to read or hard to figure out. Talk to him a few times and you already know everything there is to know about him. He does nothing to hide his quirks, his likes, his mannerisms, his thoughts, his feelings and so forth. He is quite heroic and protective of his friends. He would do anything for them and even offers himself up to die in order to start up The Scratch. His friendly nature draws others to him as does his fairly impressive, if accidental, leadership skills, although John himself never thinks of himself as a leader. He thinks of himself only as a "friend" and that's really all he wants to be. A friend that others can trust and depend on.

In the beginning John was the most clueless about the concepts in Sburb. He was the most helpless when it came to playing the game as well. He was, for lack of a better word, a "complete n00b". He spent a good portion of the game not knowing what was even going on and flailing around without a goal. For all his interest in video games he just wasn't that good. This cluelessness makes John clearly come off as an idiot. To some extent John really isn't that smart, however this is in comparison to some of his above average friends. John isn't dumb he's just a bit ditzy sometimes and is at average intelligence. John is very good with adapting to new situations and he picks up things fairly quickly. He starts to grasp the concepts in Sburb and once he does he shows some exceptional skill. He displays a great deal of genius when it comes to combining items. Out of all the kids John is able to create some items that are both practical and pretty damn cool. He also creatively finds a way to drill into the center of Skaia and retrieve The Tumor.

In the end John's inner nature is to just be an overall good guy. He may not be the brightest but he's certainly the kindest boy you'll ever meet.

John stood stone still on the surface of the Beat Mesa. He had both hands firmly curled around the handle of the Zillyhoo. Even the colorful surface of the hammer seemed pale against the dull, reddish lighting of the lava below. LOHAC was hot and uncomfortable. John felt the intense heat suffocating him, making sweat roll down his back and hair stick to his brow. Yet he didn't dare move to even wipe it off. He could feel the steady rumbling of the planet around him, could somehow feel down to his very bones the grand event that was taking place. The game around him was reacting to what he had just started: The Scratch. The hard reset. The last chance to right everything that had gone wrong and give them a way to survive. They had been given no other option and, under Karkat's instruction, John was ready and willing to carry out his part in the grand finale. Technically he already had. Everyone was counting on him and he was determined to finally end this session, to finally have a better chance to win.

As John stood there, listening to the beginning of the Scratch take place and waiting for the game to throw everything at him in response, he couldn't help but worry about the others. He knew Jade was hard at work implementing the hardest part of this plan. She had to make sure all four of them stayed preserved and entered the new universe as they were now, memories in tact. Admittedly he had no idea what was going on with Dave, which only made him more worried. Karkat had mentioned a few things so John could only assume he was on Derse with Rose after Jade had woken up his dream self. But if that were true, then was he going to die too? He knew of Rose's suicide mission to the Green Sun. That was a part of the plan too. But he didn't want her to die. He didn't want any of them to die.

He tightened his grip on the weapon. He could see monsters beginning to appear, looming at the horizon as they flew or teleported there way to him. Soon they would surround the platform he stood on and try everything in their power to stop The Scratch. What use did it do to worry, he decided. John was confident in his friends and their ability to survive. He knew that no matter what they would all pull through. More than that, he was determined to make it all happen. His resolve had been strengthened and nothing would break it now. Not the possible thought of failure nor the hundreds of monsters the game was throwing his way. One way or another they would win this and come out okay.

John took a deep breath. A low growl sounded from below and the platform shook. John rocked with the vibrations so he could stay upright but he staggered back a bit when the monsters arrived, rising up from the lava below in all shapes and sizes. Above, the ones who could fly descended from the darkness and squawked at him. He took a few careful steps back but his brows furrowed in deep concentration. A gust of wind picked up around him, cooled his skin and dried the sweat from his brow. Slowly the wind grew stronger and stronger, spiraling down towards the lava. The magma caught in the small tornadoes as they grew in strength, speed and size.

Let's make this happen, guys, John thought silently, I believe in us.

He almost laughed at the cliché thought but didn't have the time. The monsters were moving now and so was he.

It was now or never and he had every intention of making it "now". They were going to succeed. They definitely would succeed.
