Property tax followup

I wrote Ron Thomsen, Alameda County Tax Assessor, a nice letter explaining that I thought his assessed valuation was a fantasy, and including two valid comps from my building that suggested the value was $130k lower than his delusional one ( Read more... )

I think there should be a law that, had they insisted on the fantasy valuation, the government can be made to by the property for 90% of it.

They actually did have one out for claiming that the assessment was valid. The rules say that comps have to be sold under "similar conditions". Both of the comps I had were foreclosures.

My counter-argument would be that nobody will pay more than that when there are foreclosures available at lower prices.
