Getting to Know You (2/12)

H was at his desk at 7.30. Mrs B advanced the relevant papers and reports for review and he worked steadily through them until 8.45 when he left to attend the scheduled briefing. H returned at 10.30 and composed a short clarification document to be hand delivered to the relevant agency as a matter of urgency. She returned at 12.00 and took the waiting tray in personally.

They had fallen into the habit of taking lunch together on slow days. The tray contained a big brown pot of tea, a milk jug, two cups, two rather mean sandwiches from the canteen and the packet of Chocolate digestives that Mrs B kept in her bottom desk drawer.

Mrs B poured the tea and considered how to broach the subject.

“I notice that you haven’t added a file note yet regarding DI Lestrade”

Mr Holmes smiled and continued to examine the sandwich.

“Not yet no. Is this ham or turkey do you think?”

“Turkey. You usually update your brother’s file immediately”

“Yes. We really should order out more.”

“I could pick up two salads tomorrow from Angelo’s on the way? The Operational Request has been submitted and is proceeding with admirable speed. Would you like me to add a note to that effect?”

“Certainly that would be very helpful. Not Angelo’s though the dressings are very heavy.”

“Angelo’s is on my way”

“Soup?” said Mr Holmes with a hopeful lilt.

“Soup. Our young man can trot off and reheat it for us when you are ready for lunch” She had framed the approach and baited it nicely. It remained to be seen if Mr Holmes would wish to bite. They ate in companionable silence for a while.

“Concerning my brother’s file. You should have a word with that surveillance chap Michael. The file photograph of DI Lestrade really does not do him justice at all. One would hardly recognize the fellow. This is not the standard we wish to maintain”

“I do apologise Sir. I will ask for a better likeness. He looked rather nice I thought”

“He does have a certain lived in quality. He is actually a very attractive man in the flesh, especially when roused”

“Roused Sir? How marvelous”

“Yes it was rather.”

“So the file note should read something along the lines of: MH met L to facilitate formal relationship re SH & Yard. L: rather dishy new pic's req.?”

“Yes just take off the question mark and Mrs B a full background check on Detective Lestrade I think.”
