[Background]
Kyosuke Kasuga has been on the move all his life. Coming from a family gifted with various psychic powers, this teenager has had to live with concealing his gifts from everyday people, often having to leave one home to another whenever they're discovered. Counting the steps leading to a shrine in the latest town the Kasugas have relocated to, Kyosuke looks up in mid-climb to see something that would change his life forever-a red straw hat of a pretty girl standing at the top of the steps.
The girl proceeds to tell him there are ninety nine steps, when Kyosuke's counted one hundred. The two come to a compromise with 99.5 steps. Kyosuke's soon smitten by the charming and sweet natured Madoka. By the time she has to leave, giving him her hat to hold on to, Kyosuke's in love. However, his joy at having met her is proportional to his shock once he discovers that the sweet girl is in fact quite the delinquent at his new school. Bullies-beating, cigarettes-smoking Madoka is a far cry from the tender girl from yesterday-and she doesn't seem to recognize him. It's only when Kyosuke chasticizes her for smoking, telling her that she won't have healthy babies that way, that he gets her attention, and a well deserved slap. A few days later, Madoka decides to quit smoking. Her interest in the new student is piqued when she knows of her lifetime friend Hikaru wishing to date, and so, the older girl proclaims that she will root for her. From that moment on, Madoka has to balance her budding affection for Kyosuke with keeping her friend's romantic well-being in mind.
As the daughter of two workaholic musicians, Madoka often remains home alone when her parents leave on their international tours. Her carefree life leaves a lot of room for questions in which she has to act older than she is, leading Kyosuke to fall into doubts when seeing her accompany older men (her bandmates), or returning to her home mostly in the mornings. For her part, Madoka remains unaware of Kyosuke's supernatural powers, even as she is very much conscious of his inability to choose between her and Hikaru, which turns their odd friendship more often than not. As the three advance into this love triangle, Madoka tries to keep the memory of her mysterious first love, the person she measures everyone else against, from fading in the light of her growing feelings for Kyosuke, while trying to hide the same feeling from her rival and best friend.
[Personality]
Like her name (the color changing river), Madoka's defining trait is her extremely capricious nature. She appears to most people as aloof and detached, and is quite the loner in that she has very little friends, even among fellow delinquents. She's quick to anger, and often resorts to ignore those she dislikes coldly. It's a shock when people get to know her affectionate side, however. Despite her cold appearance, she can be tender and caring when the whim takes her. She's known for being fiercely loyal to the friends she has, to the point of putting them above her own feelings.
Having grown up alone most of her life, Madoka has a huge independent streak as she had to accomplish what she had learned on her own, leading her to act too adult-like for her age. It has also led to her fear of loneliness in which she's attached strongly to her friends, to the point of sacrificing her own feelings so that the friendship the three have doesn't fall apart. It's somewhat of a pointed weakness in that she's willing to run away from her problems through being aloof and ignore her own feelings, rather than have to deal with a drastic and an emotionally charged situation
[Specialties/Abilities] She's ridiculously athletic, and good at all sports, from tennis to surfing. She plays the saxophone, guitar, and piano professionally. She also excels academically, and models part-time. Aside from that, she's completely normal.
[Affection] Get too close and you'll get slapped.
[Fighting] She's fairly decent at self-defense and taking matters physically into her own hands when there is a need to, otherwise she's not a world level fighter or anything of the sort.
[Other Facts] Madoka is hilariously terrified of ghosts, UFOs, and all that is eerie and queerie.
