Thoughts at the End of DH *MAJOR SPOILERS*

Jul 22, 2007 12:50

I've not read any other reviews yet, and this may the hundredth one by now, but I wanted to express my initial thoughts on DH before being influenced by anyone else's. This is a long, but pretty damn fair review, at least imo. :)

Entertained, but Not Satisfied )

This is brilliant. You've written my review for me; I have nothing else to say. And your last line is chillingly perfect. In all this time, NO ONE has told Harry, "I love you" - not even his fecking future wife o_O

Like you, I liked a lot of individual details about this book and the trioness but overall there was a lot to be disappointed about.

I think that was the single most dissappointing thing for me. After watching Harry live through such horrible situations his whole life, the ultimate thing I wanted was for him to be happy and loved (can you be happy without being loved?). I wanted for someone to wrap their arms around him and say the words. It didn't have to be Hermione, although that would have been great even if she had been expressing platonic or sisterly love.

I've decided that JKR is very good at window dressing and asking a lot of questions. She's written some great books and some fabulous passages. I just wish she'd had more in her than what we ended up with.

Agreed. And now I feel more than a bit stupid for overthinking these books for the past 5 years :(

NO! I understand, but you should NOT feel that way!

Regardless of what JKR did, we got to experience (and still will, thanks to fandom) the beauty of Harry and Hermione, as well as many other wonderful ideas that have sparked our imagination and stretched our understanding of the world around us. I'll not ever be sorry that I found all that I found in HP. It was JKR's lack in the end, not ours.

Thanks for trying to make me feel better :D

Really, how can she NOT see the subtext she wrote? I guess I'll take the real red herring (H/Hr) over the anvils :D

I have a visual of JKR sitting down to reread her work (It would've helped if she'd done that while writing. Seriously, who doesn't reread their work? Geez.) and having revelation after revelation. I can see her small frown that evolves into chewing on her bottom lip as she reads, discovering the subtext and imagery that she inadvertently wrote. She's obviously intelligent. It's just all subconscious. *g*
