The first day I got here, it was sunny and incredibly hot and a great beach day.
Then it rained.
Then it rained some more.
Then it was windy and cloudy and drizzly.
Today is my last day here and I am glaring at the ominous clouds with all my might. I think it might be working.
But basically, Hvar Island isn't as cool as Zagreb or Split. It is very touristy and expensive, and from what I've heard I would recommend Korcula island over Hvar to anyone thinking about coming to Croatia. But it's nice enough... The water is amazing, and peoplewatching at harbors is always fun, and yesterday I went up to the old "Spanish" fortress (so called because a couple Spanish engineers worked on part of it during one period of construction...) on top of the hill and took some amazing photos and lost my hat off the side.
It was also cool seeing the vegetation up on the hill, specifically how much I recognized. Prickly pear, agave, Italian cypress, short and long needle pine... A lot of the agave was blooming (stalking?) too, which was really cool.
Funny thing: the taxi boats and excursion companies here all have signs that say "Tour: (time) Retour: (time)". For the most part they seem to mean "This is when we leave, and this is when we come back" but there are a few that seem to be more along the lines of "This is our first round trip of the day, and this is our second." I find it amusing, anyway.
Last random thought: Sitting in my room writing in my journal yesterday when it was raining made me feel pitiful, but sitting at a cafe this morning and writing in my journal made me feel really cool. Why is this?
Tomorrow I'm getting on the ferry at 6:30, probably missing my 7:37 train and getting a bus to Zagreb, spending 1 or 2 hours at the Zagreb botanical garden, getting back on a train and getting to Budapest at 10pm. Then I'll have one last day in Budapest, then on Sunday get to the airport at 7:15am, get to Tel Aviv at 1:30pm, and have most of an afternoon to wander around and try to find food products to bring home that the nice customs people won't take away from me. Then Monday will be really fun--I'll be traveling for over 24 straight hours, with a 12 hour plane flight from Tel Aviv to New York, four hours in the airport to get through customs and security, and a 6ish hour flight to Portland. Wooohoo. And then I'll be hooooome, and in my new apartment, too! So excited. Zack found a place just a few blocks from the Lloyd Center which sounds pretty nice. Yeah, I'm ready to be home.
