She cried at first, of course. She cried a lot.
She cried until she realized one day that she was sitting on the couch crying, and baby Jim was next to her, also crying, and little Sam was next to him, and he was crying, too. And the whole scene was so ridiculous Winona found herself laughing instead.
Reporters called her somewhat regularly for the first few months, and occasionally she'd answer.
"What do you think of Starfleet now?" one of them asked. "Do you plan to resign your commission?"
"No," she said, and there was a long pause on the other end of the line before the reporter echoed, "No?"
"No," Winona said again. "I think Starfleet is great."
"I'm sorry, can you say that again? You think Starfleet is... great?"
"Yes." She shifted Jim onto her other hip. "That's why I enlisted in it. I'm in very much in favor of it and its work."
"But-- but-- they're the reason your husband is--"
"Listen," Winona said. "Starfleet is the place where on one ship, there was not one, but two men who willingly gave up their lives to save everyone around them. I'm sorry if you were looking for the bitter and depressed widow angle. try someone else. Because when I think about what George did, I think it was reckless, and stupid, and proof that humans are wonderful things. And if Starfleet gets many more people like George, it's going to make the universe a wonderful place. That's why I enlisted, and if anything, I believe it more now than I did then."
There was another pause.
"That's... can I... can I quote you on that, Lieutenant Kirk?"
Winona smiled sweetly. "No. No, you can't."
And after that she hung up and gathered up her sons, Jim on her hip and Sam holding her hand, and went outside to watch the clouds.
