Drabble prompts!

Aug 05, 2009 00:40

This week's drabble prompts are brought to you by Anne Taintor, maker of snarky magnets featuring vintage images of vindictive housewives and women behaving badly. Each prompt comes with both a picture and a caption, and while most are related to domestic or sexual situations, please feel free to explore and interpret them however you like. ( Read more... )

"Oh, come on, Josie, what is it? What did the doctor say?" Once he sees the look on her face, he knows that he should have looked her over himself, instead of taking that extra shift. Yeah, she has a penchant for melodrama, but this look is different. She's always had a weak constitution that only gets worse with nerves, so maybe law school wasn't the best idea. From what she tells him, it's nothing but cutthroat competition and nearly impossible coursework. Perhaps she's spreading herself too thin and wearing herself out. And perhaps, despite being as stubborn as an ox, she just isn't cut out for the legal world.

She can feel her jaw clenching at the condescending tone in his voice. Of course, leave it to Len to trivialize things. Leave it to Len to just waltz in as if he weren't home late, as if he didn't really care that she had spent the better part of her afternoon in a sterile doctor's office. As if the news she's about to give him wasn't breaking her heart.

"Len, I'm pregnant."

"Are you sure?"

Was she sure? Was he serious? She could feel the anger bubbling up in her throat, or was that the bile from the constant nausea?

"Of course I'm fucking sure, Len! Do you think I'd make something like this up?"

"Well, no, but..."

"But what?"

He was a going to be a doctor, damn it. He knows the symptoms, but he must have overlooked something, chalking it up to anxiety and stress on her part. They have always been careful, but even in the 23rd century, contraceptives aren't foolproof. Hell, nothing is ever foolproof.

"...but you know what this means, don't you? We've talked about it, Josie."

Her shoulders slump forward, the tiniest but of hope she had in her chest flitting away as she sighs. All of the initial anger, frustration, and willingness to fight have been replaced with reluctant resignation.

It wasn't supposed to be like this.

---

She finished out her second year of law school with a heavy heart, knowing too well that it would be a long time before she would be able to come back. The baby was due this summer and there was a lot to get ready before then. Len was coming up on his third year and last year, and things would be different. He said he would find a way to take shorter shifts, find a way to home more often. He promised.

But she knew how easy those promises could change with Len. And she knew that she could never say no to him.

Ooh! This is my favorite account of Leonard and Jocelyn yet. It shows so clearly where the fault lines in their marriage must have been, and Leonard comes off as a bit of a bastard, but in a very plausible and human way. There's just enough to imagine what the problems are from his side too. You should definitely post this elsewhere as a full story so it can get the audience it deserves!

Thank you so much! As much as fic tends to demonize Jocelyn and make her out to be some awful shrew, I really think the divorce as just as much (if not more) Leonard's fault as it was hers.

I love Leonard to death (hence the RP journal), but he's sure as hell not perfect. Far from it. And I've been dying to see things from her point of view. Thanks again!
