She can feel her jaw clenching at the condescending tone in his voice. Of course, leave it to Len to trivialize things. Leave it to Len to just waltz in as if he weren't home late, as if he didn't really care that she had spent the better part of her afternoon in a sterile doctor's office. As if the news she's about to give him wasn't breaking her heart.
"Len, I'm pregnant."
"Are you sure?"
Was she sure? Was he serious? She could feel the anger bubbling up in her throat, or was that the bile from the constant nausea?
"Of course I'm fucking sure, Len! Do you think I'd make something like this up?"
"Well, no, but..."
"But what?"
He was a going to be a doctor, damn it. He knows the symptoms, but he must have overlooked something, chalking it up to anxiety and stress on her part. They have always been careful, but even in the 23rd century, contraceptives aren't foolproof. Hell, nothing is ever foolproof.
"...but you know what this means, don't you? We've talked about it, Josie."
Her shoulders slump forward, the tiniest but of hope she had in her chest flitting away as she sighs. All of the initial anger, frustration, and willingness to fight have been replaced with reluctant resignation.
It wasn't supposed to be like this.

She finished out her second year of law school with a heavy heart, knowing too well that it would be a long time before she would be able to come back. The baby was due this summer and there was a lot to get ready before then. Len was coming up on his third year and last year, and things would be different. He said he would find a way to take shorter shifts, find a way to home more often. He promised.
But she knew how easy those promises could change with Len. And she knew that she could never say no to him.

I love Leonard to death (hence the RP journal), but he's sure as hell not perfect. Far from it. And I've been dying to see things from her point of view. Thanks again!
