did you know that dishwashers are far more energy efficient than washing dishes by hand?

you don't need to read the whole article, kinda boring, so i'll summarize, but here it is: Is a machine more efficient than the hand?

a scientific study was conducted on the energy usage between 113 subjects handwashing dishes and a few standard dishwashers, using a standard full load of dishes with a set amount of caked on foods, enough to fill a dishwasher. on average, the hand washers used 27 gallons of water and 2.5 kWh of electricity (for heating the water). even if the subjects used cold water, around 27 gallons of water was still used. most used more than 53 gallons and 5 kWh.

the dishwasher? on average, 1 gallon of water, and 1 kWh of electricity.

cost of electricity is about 11 cents per kWh in tallahassee, and water is less than one cent per gallon at $0.009. so a dishwasher costs 12 cents to do a full load, and handwashing costs 52 cents, according to the average numbers above. with the 53 gal / 5 kWh which most used, that would be $1.03 to handwash a load of dishes!

i dont really care as much about how much it costs as i do about using as little energy as possible. i'm not gonna lie, i'd like to have a lower energy bill, but i'm not a stickler for it and yell at my roommates, or make people deposit money for flushing the toilet. but i really care about using as little energy as possible, like a true hippie. conservation people! you can't gripe and complain about foreign oil if you're not doing anything to help around the house with conservation!

i wish tallahassee/florida would give a monetary incentive for doing energy efficient things like replacing light bulbs with compact flourescents (like about half of ours are now, they use 10w each instead of 60w and last a LOT longer), seal external doors and windows, and other things.

btw, found the article from treehugger.com, great site.
