when paving a section of road, they do it in multiple takes of 16 feet wide at a time. the concrete is 9 inches thick. so you have a layer of sand put down, then a protective nylon "blanket" on top of the sand. then comes the "grade" wich is gravel basically. so you have a 9" by however long the section is of rough concrete. protruding from this edge are 1" thick "L" bars made of solid steel. they are 24" when straight but are bent at a 90 degree angle. every so often one of these bars is placed in the wrong spot and has to be removed. today i was armed with a gasoline powered saw with a 20" blade designed to cut metal. This saw is pretty gnarly shit. it could re-arrange an elephantin seconds. so as i was sawing through the 1" bar sparks were shooting with wild abandon... not paying the closest attention, i had placed my left foot directly in the spray of sparks...

...once i had cut through the bar i shut off the saw, stood upright, and wondered why my ankle felt realy warm all of a sudden. this is when i looked down to see my pant leg on fire. hastily i put the flames out and lamented the brand new 6" diameter burn hole in my work pants.

the best part is hours later when i finally get home to realize that my nylon-based shoelaces had melted so my double-knotted shoelace knot was permanently melted together. and now i need to find a new shoelace before work tomorrow at 7am.
