Chapter 9

The words flowed so easily from his heart, but Kris was finding that the melody was being a bit more difficult. Kris slipped the pencil behind his ear as he thought for a second. He plucked a different cord on his guitar. It worked and he played for a few minutes while he softly sang the words that were about and for Adam only.

Never before in his life had he felt so strongly toward someone else and he never thought the love of his life would be a genie. Not that it mattered. Adam would always hold his heart even if they couldn’t find a way to make him human. But Kris hadn't given up yet though there was only a little over twenty-four hours until the Genie Council would forcibly remove Adam from his life. He didn't plan to make those last two wishes until the last second. He hoped the answer would come before then, and if it didn't then he would spend the rest of his life searching for Adam until they were together again.

“I like it,” Adam said, drying his hair with a towel as he came out of the bathroom. "Is it something new?" He dropped the towel on the floor before stretching naked across the bed on his stomach. “Play it for me.”

Kris smiled and nodded. He bent his head as he started to play. His unbridled love for poured out and tumbled over his fingers as they plucked and strummed every note precisely. Every scrap of love he had for Adam he put into his singing. He wanted Adam to know that this was his song, and that Kris meant every word of it. When he finished, he looked up to see Adam staring at him with a look of such honest admiration that it made Kris melt.

“Come here,” Adam said, holding his hand out.

Kris went. There wasn’t any other place he wanted to be except as close to Adam as he could get. With his first step, he discarded his t-shirt and his second his sleep pants were left on the floor. Maybe they couldn’t make love, but they could be skin to skin, feeling as if they were one, the way it should be. Kris lay next to Adam with arms and legs entwined so that he could feel every part of Adam.

“I love touching you,” Kris whispered before pressing his lips to Adam’s mouth.

The kiss was primal as they sought to satisfy dreams that might never come true. Kris’s hands flowed over Adam’s flesh seeking, memorizing every inch with his fingertips so that he could replay this moment when he was alone. Adam's touch brought Kris to a level of arousal that he hadn’t allowed himself to reach. They had always stopped before Kris was at the point of no return, but tonight Kris wanted the pain that came with the unfilled wanting. He wanted everything that he could feel with Adam, good or bad.

“Kris,” Adam said, breaking their kiss. He wrapped his hand around Kris's cock. “Let me," he whispered.

“It’s not fair to you." Kris shook his head. "I can’t return the favor.”

“It’s my choice.” Adam gave a hard quick kiss to Kris before he slid down his body. “I want to,” he added, just before his tongue replaced his fingers.

How could he refuse? He wanted to take as much as Adam wanted to give. Kris arched upwards as Adam took him into his mouth. There was no need for declarations of love because Kris could feel it with every caress Adam lavished on him. Desire surged through his body as Adam alternated between sucking and licking. He reached a point where he couldn’t delay his orgasm any longer and his body trembled as he tumbled over the edge. Tears teased him as Adam came to cover him and it broke his heart to know that Adam couldn’t feel the same pleasure that he could.

“Thank you,” Kris said.

“So formal,” Adam teased, shutting Kris up with a kiss that them both wanting more.

Kris rolled them until Adam was on his back and he was sprawled on top of him. “You make me feel things I’ve never felt before.” He ran his fingers through Adam’s hair and then traced his face with his fingers. “You bring out the best in me.”

“No, you are the best,” Adam said, lightly running his finger along Kris’s side. “It’s you that bring out the best in me. I’m sorry that it wasn’t good enough. If I was then I could spend a lifetime letting you know how wonderful you are.”

“There was something that we missed,” Kris said. “Because I know that you’ve tried and I’ve watched you change. It's not fair!"

"I know you've tried," Adam whispered in his ear. "You've given me so much. Nothing is ever going to be the same."

"God, you’re so beautiful.” Overwhelmed by the sadness of knowing that he was going to lose Adam, Kris buried his face in Adam’s neck. "I don't know how I'm going to make it without you."

“I’m going to miss you,” Adam nipped his shoulder. “Nothing will ever be the same without you.”

It wouldn't. Kris closed his eyes as he went over everything they'd already tried, hoping that something would jump out at him. It never did.

~~~~~
Allison was the first person Adam sought when they arrived at the studio the next morning. She was laughing with Megan in the way that only she could laugh. The sound reminded him of a thousand fairies on the first day of spring. He smiled as he left Kris to seek her out. She raised an eyebrow when he came near, but he ignored the curiosity filling her pretty face. Today was the last time that he would ever see her and he hated that he would never watch her sing, or eat strawberries or hear her laughter again.
"Hi, I'm Adam," he said, holding his hand out. "I'm a friend of Kris's."
"Hello Adam," Allison said, returning his handshake. "I'm Allison and this is Megan."
"Nice to meet you, Megan," Adam said. "I hope you don't mind, but Kris had to go take care of something and he said that you would take care of me."
They both smiled and he knew he was accepted. Because of how much they cared about Kris, they would take one of his friends under their wings. It only made him love Kris even more then he already did.
"So, are you going to be here tonight for the finale?" Megan asked.
"I hope so," Adam said. "Kris said something about there being a food table?"
"Yeah, come on," Allison said. "I'll show you where it is."
"Thanks." Adam followed her even though he knew exactly where it was, but he didn't want to leave her side so he could get breakfast. This way he could spend time with her until she had to rehearse. Maybe some food would help ease his depression. He didn't think so, but was willing to try it.
~~~~~~

Why were magical beings always so difficult to manipulate? Katy tapped her foot impatiently as she waited for The Sandman to do what she needed. She watched as he hovered above the people on the stage rehearsing a group number. Then it was done and Kris rubbed his eyes while yawning in response.

“So, I get to make a wish, right?” The Sandman asked as he returned to Katy’s side.

“Yes, within the Genie Guidelines of Wish Making,” Katy said, stepping back from the eyes leering at her breasts. She pulled her vest tighter knowing it wouldn’t cover them enough. “So choose carefully.”

“I will do that,” The Sandman said, smiling as if he was the hottest creature that ever existed. “See you soon, sweetheart.”

With that, and to Katy’s relief, he was gone. She shuddered before she sought out Kris to see how he was dealing with the heavy dose of sleep dust he’d been given. Apparently, not well, because he was excusing himself from the rehearsal, begging that he needed a fifteen minute break.

“Good,” Katy muttered as she followed him toward the holding room.

She’d been whispering her directive into his ear every night, and while he seemed to hear part of it, he wasn’t following through. They were running out of time and when the morning had passed without him doing anything, she’d decided enough was enough, and had called on the help of The Sandman. Today she wasn’t going to suggest anything, but tell him exactly what to do about his situation with Adam. If he didn't then they were out of time, and defeat wasn't something she was ready to accept.

~~~~~
Stretching, Kris came awake with a start. It was all clear to him. He knew what he had to do in regards to Adam. A glance at his watch told him that everyone would be breaking for lunch in a few minutes. He needed to get Adam, leave and get back before the afternoon rehearsals. Hurrying from the room, he went to see if he could borrow the car again. After the keys were in his pocket, he went to find Adam.
Surprisingly, he wasn't with Allison, but his second guess was right. Adam was talking to Mr. Betterman. He seemed to be fond of the older gentleman even beyond the obvious theater connections. Mr. Betterman had been on the set for days, observing them as they rehearsed, and making notes. It was anyone's guess who he wanted for his newest play.
"Adam," Kris said, placing his hand on Adam's shoulder. "Can I see you for a minute?"
Maybe it wasn't right not to let Adam say his goodbyes, but Kris felt a sense of urgency to complete his task.
"What's up?" Adam asked.
"I have an idea. Would you come with me?"
"Anywhere, baby," Adam said, kissing him.
It only made Kris feel like even more of a creep, but not only was he worried that there wouldn't be enough time, he was afraid he'd chicken out. On the way, he alternated between telling himself that everything would be okay and telling himself to hit the gas and run away with Adam. It wouldn't work because there was nowhere to hide from an army of angry genies.
"Where are we going?" Adam asked when they turned down a familiar street. "What this idea?" Adam didn't look happy. His chin was jutting upwards as he peered down his nose at Kris. "I don't think I like this idea."
"You don't even know what it is," Kris chuckled. He pulled the car to a stop at the curb. "Don't you trust me?"
"I thought I did," Adam said, as he looked out at the park where his family home once stood. "Are we going back to the studio? I didn't even tell Allison goodbye."
"She's not going to remember you if you go back now," Kris reminded him. Although, he hadn't meant to be mean, he could tell that it was only making Adam more upset. "Come on."
"I think I'll stay here," Adam said, crossing his arms. "We have hours before midnight and I would rather be making out or shopping or eating until then. I don't want to be here again."
"You're my genie," Kris said. "And I want you to come with me."
"Fine," Adam huffed out of the car and slammed the door behind him. "I don't like you right now. You're being a bully."
"I know," Kris said, taking Adam's hand. It only made him feel worse when Adam clung to him. He led them toward the fountain inside the park. "I'm sorry."
"Don't be," Adam stopped. "Let's leave."
"No," Kris said, turning to face Adam. If only there was another way, he would take it, but all he could do was have faith and let his love for Adam lead the way. "I'm ready to make my last two wishes."
~~~~~

Something was horribly wrong. This wasn't his sweet Kris or even his stubborn Kris. Standing before him was someone that was scaring him, and Adam didn't know how to bring back the man he loved.

"No, we agreed that we would wait until the last minute."

"I know, but I think it's better if we do it now."

"Why? You promised that every spare minute you had today that you would spend it making me happy." Adam argued. "This isn't fair."

Kris took his hands as he stepped closer to him. "Adam, I love you so much."

"You…what?"

"I love you," Kris repeated. He wrapped his arms around Adam's middle, burying his face in his shoulder. "This isn't fair no matter how we handle it."

"I love you, too," Adam said, pulling Kris as close as he could. "I'm not ready to leave you."

"I know," Kris stepped back to look up at Adam. "Remember that I believe in you."

"I know you do," Adam said. "You're the only one."

"Don't forget…promise me that you won't forget that I believe in you and all the good that you bring to this world."

"I promise," Adam said, suddenly terrified. "Kris, I don't know what you're going to do, but please be careful. Don't make any big wishes, just silly little ones that won't hurt anyone. We discussed this, remember?"

"I know." Kris nodded, but Adam could tell Kris was going to do whatever he was going to do despite Adam's warnings. "Now kiss me."

"Don't break my heart," Adam said, but complied with Kris's request. He needed that connection and if they weren't in the middle of a park in the middle of the afternoon, he would have done a hell of a lot more. When Adam finally pulled away, he swallowed hard. "Okay, make your wishes."

Kris looked as terrified as Adam felt. This was it. Kris would wish for a decoder ring in a box of Cracker Jacks or something and then Adam would have to leave him. He would find himself locked inside his lamp again and bounced off to wherever the Council decided to put him. Tears were making Kris hazy as he waited.

"I…I wish that the consequences of my second wish would fall only on me," Kris said.

"No, Kris don't," Adam begged. "Take it back…please." No matter how much he wanted it, it was already done. There was no way he could stop Kris. "Don't, baby…oh please."

"I wish for Adam to be restored to being a human," Kris said. "Now grant my wishes."

Adam wanted to rage at his father for doing this to him, or to cry until he couldn't anymore. Most of all, he wanted to beg Kris to take back his wishes. Yet all he could say was, "Wishes granted."

Time stood still for a second as magic changed everything. Adam felt the changes in his body as he returned to life. His heart was no longer breaking as he watched the love in Kris's eyes fade away. His eyes filled with so much pain that it hurt to look at Kris and his mouth turned down at the corners. Kris blinked as he stepped backwards and away from Adam.

"I'm sorry." Kris said. "Do I know you?"

"No," Adam shook his head. "You don't."

"My apologies for running into you then," Kris said.

With that, Adam watched as Kris turned and walked out of his life.

…to be continued
