Kill or Be Killed...

It probably should have been so simple. It was something you were familiar with, the feel of cold steel against your palm. The weight of it in your hand shifting with the slightest pressure against a small scrape you didn't even notice until the metal ran across the tear of skin. You'll stare him down, and look at him until you think that maybe you can believe the words that come from his mouth. Trust that there is something else that can force you to pull that trigger.

Trust though, isn't what it's cracked up to be.

So the gun sits heavy in your hand, a fingertip pressed along the trigger wishing that it was as easy as it was in that parking garage. To know that you could have died along with your child, that things weren't always what they seemed. Don't judge a book by it's cover, because you were the book that had a happy ending in store.

Instead that moment of clarity will never come for you. The eyes of a cold uncaring stranger will feel more real to you than anyone elses lack of compassion. You'll look into his eyes and the gun will feel a lot heavier than you expected it to, and in that moment.. that pure second of kill or be killed... you'll know that you can't be that person again.

The trigger will become bare, your fingertip moving aside to shift the handle against skin until it's no longer a weapon, instead it's just a burden that you can't even carry anymore. Whatever time has come... whatever debts you believe you are owed, will never be paid in full.
