Yesterday, mid-morning,
oneandonlymatt called me at the office. He said "Well, the good news is that the fire alarm and sprinklers work." Apparently there was a fire in one of the apartments on the 17th floor. We are on the 16th. It wasn't the one directly above us, but above our neighbor to the left. We still don't know what caused it, but the fire department came. And, whether it was from the sprinklers or from the fire hose, there was a lot of water in our apartment. In fact, there was water all the way down to the first floor in our grouping of apartments. Gravity, after all.
When it happened, the alarms went off so Matt grabbed Piglet and went down 16 flights of stairs. There were several other people milling about the lobby as well. The fire people came and then about 45 minutes they left, but the elevators still weren't running. Matt went back up 16 flights of stairs.
He locked Piglet in the office with her food, bed and litterbox and left so the remediators could come in. When I came home they had put up large industrial fans all over the apartment as well as a couple of dehumidifiers. They moved all the furniture to the middle of the rooms that were affected and took out the carpet padding. That includes the front hallway, laundry room, kitchen, master bedroom and master bath. None of our stuff was affected. They took out the baseboards and drilled quarter-sized holes across the bass of each wall affected so the fans could dry them out. I don't know when they'll come back to put back together. I am very pleased with the quickness of the response, especially since they have to deal with about 50 damaged apartments. I'm guessing we're getting some kind of priority since we were on the floor directly below.
Last night, Matt and I moved into the office - we blew up the air mattress and moved the cablebox to the small TV in there so we could watch Walking Dead. It was like being in a weird hotel.
We still don't know the cause of the fire. I will update whenever I have any new information.
