Summary: Luke and Noah meet on the hottest day of the year.
“Here’s your change, Sir,” Noah Mayer deposited a few coins into the other man’s outstretched hand, giving him his best ‘happy to serve you’ smile despite the cloying heat.
The man merely nodded, slipping the change into his short’s pocket before turning and walking abruptly back to the beach.
Noah’s smile melted into a grimace and his eyebrows knitted together into a frown. It was as hot as hell out here today. His T-shirt stuck to his back with sweat and he could really use a cool refreshing drink or ice-cream right about now.
Everybody was feeling the same, judging by the line stretching out from his ice-cream cart.
But even so, there was no excuse for bad manners. The guy could’ve said thanks or even smiled back at the very least.
That was one thing he could say he was glad he’d been taught by his father - good manners. No matter where Noah went or what crappy job he managed to land, he was always complimented on his manners.
In fact, Noah’s pleasant attitude and warm friendly smile usually had customers coming back again and again.
But not that guy apparently!
Noah took a moment to open the lid on his cart and check his dwindling stock before serving his next customer. He’d be disappointing a whole lot more customers if the guy bringing extra stock didn’t turn up soon.
Closing the lid as he prepared his ready smile, Noah looked up to the next in line. “What can I get you?” The last word almost died on his lips as his mouth went painfully dry.
Stood before him was the most handsome guy he’d ever seen.
Noah’s visual tour of the man’s body started at his groin when he closed the lid of the cart. The guy had obviously just been swimming in the sea as his blue flower-patterned shorts were still quite wet, the material clinging to him in all the right places, leaving Noah in little doubt as to the size of the man’s soft cock.
He passed his tongue across his lips as he found himself imaging how it would look hard, what it would feel like in his hands and, oh man, how it would taste!
Noah reluctantly tore his gaze away before he got caught staring and his eyes tracked further up the man’s body - passed the trail of hair heading south from his belly button, up over a chest covered in a soft dusting of lighter hair that had Noah’s fingers itching to comb through. He paused, distracted by the pool of either sweat or water gathered in the hollow at the base of the man’s neck, wanting to flick his tongue out and lick up the moisture.
Moving on, Noah’s eyes travelled over the cleft chin to the half open mouth as the guy - oblivious to Noah’s stare - studied the sign displaying the choices on the front of the cart. He swallowed hard as he could easily imagine how it would feel to have those plump, bow-shaped lips kissing him… surrounding him.
Suddenly he found himself grateful for the scant protection of the ridiculously small apron his boss made all the staff wear as he felt a familiar tightening in his groin.
Noah had to stop himself from sighing in disappointment as his gaze finally reached the other man’s eyes only to find that they were hidden behind sunglasses.
As if the guy was suddenly aware that he was being stared at, he lifted his head to look Noah in the face as he simultaneously pushed his sunglasses up onto his head to sit atop the mussed up and still damp from the sea short blonde hair.
“Hey, you’re new!” Blonde Guy exclaimed with a genuine smile, and Noah thought he saw something more there in the curve of his lips and in the glint of his hazel eyes than just politeness.
‘Get a grip on yourself, Mayer!’ Noah thought to himself. The guy was just being friendly is all. Nothing more… nothing less. But he had to admit, as his shorts were becoming uncomfortably tight after all that ogling, getting a grip on himself sounded like just what he needed right about now!
“We’ve been here all week and this is the first time I’ve seen you.” Blonde Guy continued with an encouraging smile.
It was only when the other man spoke again that Noah realized he was still staring open mouthed at him.
“Um… yeah,” he gulped as he finally found his voice. Way to go, Noah. Real smooth!
Noah saw something in the other man’s eyes that made him suddenly want to tell this guy everything - how he’d had one argument too many with his father about his ‘lifestyle’ choice and had finally walked away from the Colonel and his rules before he’d been thrown out. And how, now, he would take every two bit job from here to the West Coast to put himself through college to do what he dreamed about doing - filmmaking - instead of going into the Army like his father had wanted so he could prove to himself and the Colonel that he could do it.
“Yeah, I got into town a couple of days ago. Got a job at the store, then the other guy had some family emergency… so here I am,” He found himself saying instead with a small embarrassed shrug.
“Man, that kinda sucks. First couple of days on the job and here you are working on the hottest day of the year so far instead of enjoying the sun and the sea!”
“It’s not so bad,” Noah replied with another one shouldered shrug accompanied by a small smile this time. ‘In fact, it’s just got a whole lot better!’ he added to himself.
Both men stared at each other for several long moments until Blonde Guy suddenly seemed to realize he was stood in line with increasingly impatient people behind him. He dipped his head a little embarrassed before beginning to reel off his order.
“Luke!” A toned, sandy haired guy about the same age came running up to the blonde, his hair and body still glistening with seawater. “Have you ordered for Ethan yet? Dude, I love your little brother, I really do, but seriously, how many times can the kid change his mind in like five minutes?!” He bumped the other man’s shoulder and smiled at him with a goofy grin.
Noah looked between the two guys and his heart sank a little when Blonde Guy smiled readily back at the new arrival. That look spoke of real fondness. Boyfriends, maybe?
Oh well. It wasn’t as if Noah had stood a chance anyway. But at least he knew the guy’s name now.
“So what’s Ethan’s new flavor of the minute?”
“Mint chocolate chip. Anyway, what’s keeping you so long, man?” the other guy asked, his grin widening as he turned to look at Noah, giving him the once over.
“I had to wait in line… in case you hadn’t noticed!” Luke gestured back to the long line behind him.
“Yeah… right!” the guy replied and looked intently at Luke before darting a glance back at Noah again, making him feel decidedly uncomfortable… and not in a good way this time. He felt like he was getting caught in the middle of something here.
“Anyway, hurry up! You’re seriously cutting into my beach babe watching time, man!” he grinned.
Noah’s head shot up at that. Did he just hear him right?
Luke wagged his finger at the guy. “Don’t let Ali hear you say that, Casey!”
“What? A guy can’t look?” He gestured with his arms in innocence as a roguish grin spread across his handsome features. “There’s no harm in just looking!”
“You keep telling yourself that… especially when she finds out!” Luke chuckled and shook his head before turning back to face Noah. “So, do you have mint chocolate chip?”
Noah smiled back, happy to find out that this Casey guy wasn’t Luke’s boyfriend. Did that mean Luke was single? Well, there was certainly no boyfriend in sight at the moment and if Luke was Noah’s boyfriend he’d walk hand-in-hand with him every single chance he got.
But how could a guy like that not have a boyfriend? If he was even gay, that is! Noah sure hoped he was.
“Let me check,” he replied as he opened the lid, praying that he had enough left. He didn’t want to have Luke’s little brother disappointed.
“Sure do!” he grinned back up at the blonde when he realized he could scrape together a generous portion.
“Thanks. You’ve made a little guy very happy… Noah.”
Noah was surprised. “How do you…”
Luke nodded to Noah’s chest. Following his gaze, Noah cringed in embarrassment when he saw his name badge. Strike two!
The blonde leaned toward him. “Don’t worry. We’ve all been there.”
Straightening up, Luke paid Noah, their fingers brushing and lingering just a little over the change. Noah almost closed his fingers around the other man’s hand, not wanting to let go of the intense feeling of Luke touching him just yet.
But he resisted and just smiled back widely instead.
“Thanks.” Luke smiled and, with Casey’s help, he gathered up his purchases before turning and heading back to the beach.
He’d only taken a couple of steps before turning back again. “Hope to see you around again, Noah… real soon.”
“Yeah, me too.” Noah didn’t know how he managed to stop himself grinning from ear to ear. But he gave Luke his best slow burner of a smile instead even though his stomach was doing somersaults with nervous excitement.
Luke turned away again and Noah couldn’t resist staring at the guy’s cute ass as he walked away. He was only human after all!
He was so intent on the absorbing view that he never noticed Casey had leaned in and whispered something to Luke until he saw the blonde look back over his shoulder with a chuckle and a knowing smile before continuing on his way.
Totally busted! Noah blushed but couldn’t help doing a little happy dance. Luke knew that Noah liked him like that! And he’d seemed interested!
Noah was just going to have to convince his boss to give him exactly the same spot tomorrow!
“Hey, kid, when you’ve stopped clowning around can we get some service here?”
Suddenly remembering what he was supposed to be doing, Noah looked up with a genuine smile ready to serve his next customer. “Sorry. What can I get you, Sir?”
Working on the hottest day of the year seemed to be turning out just fine for Noah.
