Luke stood looking out of the kitchen window, lost in thought. He found himself in a rare quiet moment, Mikey was still asleep and Jon was in the bathroom getting ready for a conference down in San Diego.

He smiled softy as his eyes fell on Mikey’s toys out in the backyard; the swing, the sandpit, the scattered and well used collection of his toy cars and trucks. When Luke first came out he had imagined in daydream after daydream that one day he would live out the dream of having a family of his own, with a house that rang with love and laughter. He loved Mikey… more than anything in the world… more than his own life and he wouldn’t change that part of his life for anything but when he thought about Jon he shivered involuntarily.

He’d made up his mind last night, when sleep just wouldn’t come, that they couldn’t go on like this… in this damaging relationship. He was terrified of the effect that it might have on Mikey in the long run… not to mention what it was doing to his own mental and physical state. He had decided that he needed to sit down with Jon and talk through this once and for all… he wanted to know if they had something worth saving… if Jon could or would change.

Luke startled a little when Jon stepped up unheard behind him and slid his arms around his waist, a small hiss escaping his lips at the pressure on the finger shaped bruises on his hips from last night.

‘Mmm! Morning handsome!’ Jon murmured into the crook of his shoulder, pressing a kiss to the sensitive skin there. ‘Where’s Mikey?’ he asked, noticing the silence in the kitchen.

‘I thought I’d let him sleep in for a bit after yesterday. Jon… I need to talk to…’ Luke started as he turned in Jon’s embrace. ‘What’s with the bag?’ he asked when he spotted the overnight bag on the floor by Jon’s feet.

‘Well… I thought I might do some networking after the conference and stay overnight’ Jon replied as he stepped back and hefted the bag onto his shoulder.

Luke pursed his lips, about to ask when Jon had decided this and why he hadn’t told him before but a part of him was secretly relieved that it would just be him and Mikey tonight… and he knew in his heart that he shouldn’t feel like that… this wasn’t the way it was supposed to be.
‘Ok… but I really need to talk to you’ Luke sighed.

‘Tomorrow… when I get back from the conference… I promise’ Jon gave Luke a lop sided grin. ‘I’ve gotta go. See you tomorrow!’ he leaned in to peck a kiss to Luke’s cheek and headed for the door…

‘That can’t be right!’ Noah exclaimed, doubt etched across his handsome features, eyebrows knitting together in concentration as he studied the updated and now correct figures from the seismographs; his mind racing for the possible causes to explain the readings. Perhaps he’d miscalculated and he flipped over the chart to check the raw data again for the third time.

‘Noah… there’s somebody here to see you’ Danny poked his head around the office door and interrupted Noah’s train of thought. ‘He’s got your card so I thought I’d bring him straight up.’

Noah pulled his eyes reluctantly away from the data in front of him and turned his head towards the door. ‘Luke!’ he gasped in pleasant surprise as he returned Luke’s dimpled smile.

As he found his eyes involuntarily tracing a path up Luke’s body, from the dark blue dress pants to the open collared power blue shirt, catching a tantalising glimpse of chest hair, he felt a familiar stirring in his groin and he had to remind himself that Luke was a married man. His smile faltered a little and a slight frown clouded across his face when he spotted the edge of a telltale bruise on the perfect skin of Luke’s collarbone. He felt an anger boil up inside him when he took in the dark circles under Luke’s eyes; it didn’t need the reminder of the look he had seen Luke’s husband give him through the rear view mirror for Noah to put two and two together and realise what had happened.

He longed to stand and pull Luke into a comforting embrace but he knew that he didn’t have that right and wasn’t sure how Luke would take it… so he went with a safer option, ‘How’s Mikey after yesterday?’ he asked with genuine concern.

Luke smiled, taken with Noah’s concern for his son. ‘He’s doing alright… he went off to playgroup without too much trouble this morning. Actually that’s why I dropped by… you drove off yesterday with his seat in your car.’ That and he couldn’t seem to stay away from Noah. He tried to tell himself that it was to do with the article he had to write but he knew better… knew there was an underlying attraction there that he couldn’t seem to resist.

Noah smiled sheepishly. ‘Yeah… sorry about that! I realised when I got back here and I meant to call you but I kinda got sidetracked’ he gestured to the folder on his desk.

Luke noticed Noah’s dishevelled appearance for the first time; like he’d slept in his clothes and looked around the room and saw the discarded Chinese takeout and the battered leather couch. ‘Have you been here all night?!’.

Noah chuckled and rolled his eyes when he saw Danny give him a knowing look and a wink before turning and walking away, leaving him and Luke alone.

‘I guess I got wrapped up in analysing the new data and lost track of time’ he shrugged a little self-consciously as he ran his fingers through his hair, hoping to smooth down the unruly locks.

‘How about I buy you a coffee and you can tell me what you’ve found out?’ Luke suggested with an encouraging smile, his reporter’s instinct telling him that Noah had discovered something important in the new data…

After they were settled at a table in the Institute’s canteen, Luke took a sip of his coffee and pulled a face. ‘Ugh! What is this stuff?! It’s not a patch on what they sell at Java’ he moaned as he pushed the offending mug away from him.

Noah had to chuckle at the exaggerated look on Luke’s face; he didn’t actually think that the coffee here was that bad… perhaps he’d just gotten used to it, after all it had helped him through many nights of working late. ‘Java?’ he asked.

‘Yeah… it’s a coffee shop in Oakdale… where I grew up’ Luke smiled fondly at the thought of the enticing aroma that used to hit him every time he entered the shop, not to mention the cute guy that had served behind the counter when Luke had gone there most mornings for his sweet coffee fix while he was at college.

‘Oakdale huh? LA must seem like a different world! Do you get a chance to get back home much?’ Noah asked, suddenly finding himself very interested in everything about Luke Snyder.

The ring of regret and longing in Noah’s rich baritone voice when he said the word home made Luke look up intently into his cornflower blue eyes.

‘Not as much as I’d like’ Luke sighed sadly. ‘How about you? Do you have somewhere you call home?’ Or someone Luke added to himself, finding that he was holding his breath waiting for the answer.

Noah shrugged his shoulders. ‘Not really… I moved around a lot when I was a kid. Guess you could call this place home’ Noah said with a small smile that didn’t reach his expressive eyes; it was true… after all he seemed to spend more time here than anywhere else. Luke pulled the mug back towards him and clenched his fingers around it in an effort to stop them reaching out and soothing above Noah’s eyebrow in an attempt to erase the sadness. Perhaps that’s why he felt so drawn to Noah… because neither of them had found a place they could truly call home… it seems they both had things in their lives that caused them pain.

After several moments of staring down at the table, both lost in their own thoughts, Luke decided that it would be better… easier… to bring the conversation back to safer ground. ‘What have you found out?’ he asked, nodding down at the folder between them on the table.

The abrupt change of conversation seemed to startle Noah out of his own reflection and a spark of life returned to his baby blue eyes. He bounced his chair around the table closer to Luke so they could both look at the folder. He slipped his glasses on and tried to ignore the heat seeping through the layers of material to his upper arm where it pressed against Luke’s.

Luke had to smile despite himself… and Noah’s closeness… at the intense look on Noah’s face as he went into full Professor mode.

‘Here… take a look. I was just about to recheck the figures before taking them to Professor Foster when you came’ Noah’s words came out in a rush, completely oblivious to the look on Luke’s face as he flipped open the folder.

Luke’s amused look slipped into total concentration as he studied the data before, not really sure what he was looking at but the new readings seemed to him to indicate that the tremors were all of the same length and the same strength … but that couldn’t be right could it?

‘Noah… am I reading this right….’ Luke looked up questioningly, ‘all the tremors have measured the same?’

Noah nodded, impressed that Luke had read the data correctly so quickly, ‘Yes! I’ve double checked the figures… they’re correct!’

‘But that can’t be natural… can it? Surely something like this must be man made… right?’ Luke frowned.

Noah smiled encouragingly and nodded, relieved that someone else had read the same thing into the figures that he had. ‘Exactly… something man made… nothing naturally occurring would cause this!’ he exclaimed.

‘Sorry Luke… I better go. I should show this to the Professor right away… see what he makes of it’. Noah closed the file slowly and stood; he was reluctant to leave Luke but he really need to show the file to Foster.

‘But… Noah… wait!’ the concerned edge to Luke’s voice made Noah’s step falter.

Something pulled at Luke’s conscious and set alarm bells ringing. ‘Somebody’s gone to a hell of a lot of trouble to hide this’ he gestured at the folder in Noah’s hand. ‘Are you sure you can trust him?’ he asked.

Noah opened his mouth ready to answer but stopped abruptly when he felt the floor under his feet begin to shake. He braced himself as he watched his mug judder across the table and smash to the floor next to his feet.

He turned sharply when he heard one of the canteen staff scream in alarm as plates, pots and pans clattered from the shelves behind the counter.

All around him people were struggling to get off the chairs and under the tables as the tremor rumbled on. More plates, mugs and cutlery clattered from the tables to the floor, adding to the noise of people screaming and yelling in alarm.

Noah dropped to his knees, pulling Luke down and under the table with him. As they struggled to get as low to the floor as possible and keep their heads and necks covered to protect them from flying debris, Noah could feel Luke’s chest heaving with the effort to control his breathing… to try to keep the panic from setting in. Noah wasn’t sure if it was him or Luke that he could feel trembling from the fear and adrenalin coursing through their bodies, pressed up against each other, side to side like they were.

As suddenly as the quake began it was over and an almost eerie silence descended as they waited to make sure there were no further shocks… all that Noah could hear was their laboured breathing.

‘You ok?’ he asked Luke, turning awkwardly to face him in the cramped space under the table.

Luke paused, as if mentally checking over his body, before nodding slowly, relief and shock conflicting in his eyes.

As they emerged from under the table and looked around to see others doing the same thing, they could tell that the damage had only been superficial, limited to things that hadn’t been secure.

People started calling out to each other… voices weak with shock… checking if everyone was ok and it seemed that the facility staff had escaped with only minor injuries; cuts and bruises received as they had scrambled under the tables to avoid worse injuries.

‘Come on’ Noah started as he pulled gently on Luke’s arm, heading towards the corridor, stepping over the broken crockery strewn on the floor. ‘That was worse than the others… I want to check out just how strong it was and where the epicentre was.’

‘Are you guys ok?’ Danny asked as they made it to Noah’s office. Here the damage was the same… some items that weren’t secured had been jolted to the floor. Danny and others in the office stood surrounded by scattered papers, files, toppled chairs and other office equipment.

Noah nodded, relief flooding through him that his friend was ok as he pulled him into a quick embrace.

He was also relieved to see that the computer equipment appeared to be intact and still working. ‘Danny… talk to me. What are we looking at here’ he asked as he pulled away and started to peer at the displays.

Danny took a deep steadying breath. ‘From first reports it looks like its measuring 6.5 and the epicentre is…’ he turned to indicate an area on the wall map ‘is here.’

‘Are you sure?’ Luke asked breathlessly, feeling like all the life was being squeezed from his body at once.

Danny looked back at the screen and back up at the map, nodding. ‘Yes’ he answered simply.

Noah turned sharply at the strangled gasp behind him and was shocked to see that Luke’s face was ashen and his eyes were wide with fear as he watched him pulled his phone from his pocket with trembling fingers.

‘No service’ Luke’s voice wavered as he stared at his phone.

Noah found himself reaching for his own phone automatically, tearing his eyes away from Luke’s face to glance at the screen. ‘Me neither’.

‘Luke?’ Noah asked, the concern rising as he watched Luke pull the desk phone frantically towards him.

Luke slammed the phone down in frustration after checking the connection several times… nothing… he couldn’t get through! He turned and staggered for the door on legs that seemed almost unable to support him, yanking his car keys out of his pants pocket.

‘Luke?!’ Noah asked again, the apprehension clear in his own voice now as he watched Luke’s erratic behaviour. ‘Luke… what’s wrong?!’

‘Mikey…’ Luke managed to gasp over his shoulder. ‘That’s where… Mikey is’ Luke broke into an unbalanced run down the corridor, unable to do anything else but concentrate on getting to his son, thinking just how terrified he would be… desperately trying to push more horrifying… almost unthinkable… thoughts from his mind.

‘Shit!’ Noah exclaimed as he looked at the map and at the bank of monitors before staring at Luke’s retreating form as he disappeared down the corridor.

He made up his mind in an instant, breaking into a run to follow Luke. There was no way in hell that he was going to let Luke go out there on his own to try to get to Mikey …
