Went to New Orleans last week, and whew, it was amazing. Downtown was almost back to normal, most stores were open and running and all that. But the ninth ward, where we stayed in an abandoned wharehouse was a mess. Everything is still really bad there. We worked most days gutting out houses, and man that was hard work, but very rewarding. In our second house, we found a coupla rats running around and a bunch of roaches, and later, a whole litter of baby rats. There was like 7 of them! We were supposed to kill them but none of us could do it so we tied them up in a shirt and hung them from a tree in the backyard, haha, it makes me laugh to think of the next group who comes in to finish the house that looks in that shirt. Funny.
That house was fun though because we worked on it with the woman who owns it. She was so hopeful guys, and really optimistic. I was so shocked by the way she handled it all - I mean all of her stuff was gone, but she kept on truckin'.
So more about the wharehouse. It was filled with like 2000 cots for all the volunteers, we all slept there and there was this little common courtyard area where we hung out (actually that was a parking lot, haha, I just realized they called the parking lot the "courtyard," ohhhh man.)The food was real gross, they had these rectangular meat patties that they served twice, once with hot dog buns and once with hamburger buns, so it was very ambiguous meat to say the least. Haha, but you're real hungry after working so we all ate it.
The car rides there and back were really fun, lots of singing to every CD we brought, lots of laughing and chatting too. We blew a tire on the way home and that was an adventure as well. Luckily, a nice tow truck guys came along and saved us.
Oh yeah! I almost forgot this! Anderson Cooper from CNN came and did his show Anderson Cooper 360 at our camp! He broacasted live on Thursday night for all 2 hours of his show, got to see him and there's a ton of pics and stuff on facebook. It felt very famous.
I'm coming down to U of I next weekend for Amy's Synchro swim thing, let's hang out too all of you kids down there!
