Found - "Different Kinds of Darkness," by David Langford
Like, these kind of magic eye pictures, where you stare and the things go to 3D.
It was a short novelthing where all the kids have to wear special glasses (I think? Or they had brain implant things) to prevent them from seeing these weird pictures in the fog that something had put there (aliens?) because the pictures could kill people.
These kids, though, they manage to get a small version of the picture-thing, and they practice looking at it without their glasses/whatever on, to see if it will kill them, like, truth or dare style.
In the end it turned out that they'd desensitized themselves to the pictures, and had accidentally made themselves immune
