Dr. Ian Malcolm explained Chaos Theory very well. He said:
"Chaos theory says two things. First, that complex systems like the weather have an underlying order. Second, the reverse of that - that simple systems can produce complex behavior."
I spoke with Neil Howie about this before. Ian held his own theories about the edge of chaos; I took notes, attending his seminars, and - well. I'm going to try to list the configurations here, and explain why I'm bringing this up now.
The first configurations states: "In the conservative region far from the chaotic edge, individual elements coalesce slowly, showing no clear pattern."
Second configuration: "Self-organization elaborates in complexity as the system advances toward the chaotic edge."
Third Configuration: "In the intermediate phase, swiftly developing complexity within the system hides the risk of imminent chaos. But the risk is still there."
Fourth Configuration: "Approaching the chaotic edge, elements show internal conflict. An unstable and potentially lethal region."
Fifth Configuration: "At the edge of chaos, unexpected outcomes occur. The risk to survival is severe."
Sixth Configuration: "Order collapses in simultaneous regions. Survival is now unlikely for individuals and groups."
Seventh Configuration: "Partial restabilization may occur after eliminating destructive elements. Survival partly determined by chance events."
Now, I don't know how many of you follow all that, but it's all right if you don't. I want you to pay particular attention, however, to the third configuration. This is what I meant when I said there are plateaus. There are periods during which we believe order has been restored - but it's simply an intermediate phase. Murders, Aztecs, then a period of complete calm, until the fourth iteration. Arthas. Then the fifth. These...people affected by this Event.
Then the sixth. Plague.
The question remains whether we've reached the seventh configuration, or returned to the third. Partial restabilization or another intermediate phase.

I'm not trying to frighten anyone. It's all the application of a theory. Just words.
