I'll get looked over for whatever they're alerted to. There was leeches and piles of dung bigger than me that had to qualify as a biohazard and I'm 90% sure a bunch of those plants were poisonous. So I'm going to get looked at for everything from the opening signs of bird flu to pink eye.
No, it's alright. [He heads inside and finds a seat, slumping down in one of the chairs.] I'm looking for help with mine, so I'm not going to hold it against anyone that does the same.
[She closes the door and sits on the only other unoccupied flat surface - the twin bed.]
I need you to keep this to yourself. Neil knows, but I haven't told anyone else. The way things are going with Amanda, this can't get out. She's making progress.
Well, if there's anything I can do it's keep a secret. [With a neuralyzer, if necessary. He sits lazily and listens, and after previous talks has an idea of what might be going on. But he doesn't want to make assumptions just yet. Feelings can change and all that.]
There's more to the situation with Hoffman than I expressed to the other wardens.
[Pause.]
He promised me he wouldn't hurt Amanda if I made progress with her.
[And that fact that he made that promise at all shows that there might have been something going on that Sarah's only hinting at.]
I'm too emotionally involved in the situation to reasonably act as an intermediary between him and Amanda, and after discussing it with Neil, I'd like you to take on the role. I know Hoffman...likes you. Somewhat.
[He makes a little "hrm" sound. That sort of sound that comes with contemplating all the warnings he gave to Jay about personal involvement with Laura and pointing out all the dangers of that sort of emotional attachment.
But he figures Sarah knows them all, and she's obviously been debating them.
He just sighs out his nose.] I don't have a problem with talking with Hoffman. I never have. His warden I've barely been restraining myself with but I figure she's just too pigheaded to give a shit. [He sees enough of himself in Hoffman that he really doesn't like some of her tactics. He doesn't want to say this.] What do you need done between them?
I don't trust his warden. I don't think she's looking out for his best interests, and...
[Sigh.]
Neil and I have decided the best course of action for me is to cut off communication with him, but because of his involvement with Amanda, I can't do that. I need someone to monitor my conversations with him, and to deal with him when he gets out of line. And to make sure his warden isn't abusing him.
The thing is, I think she is. [Dammit, can't smoke. Want to smoke. He takes out a pen to fiddle with it between his fingers.]
She spent a good portion of the whole jungle ordeal makin' fun of him for not being able to keep up with her and I know he doesn't like to feel stupid. He also is a man who respects the law. But he's been told here that there is no law to be respected, only vigilantism and that pretty much goes against what he needs to know. Not to mention he took revenge into his own hands against his own team, and then she thinks she can represent him without answering for it when she does something against her fellow wardens, no matter how minor it might be.
[Yeah, okay, the whole thing bothers him. He wipes a hand over his head and tries to make sure his hair isn't ruffled by sheer irritation.] So yeah, I'm noticing but there's nothing I can do about this might equals right bullshit without reinforcing it. If he tries something with Amanda I can step in and get him. Probably even harmlessly if I have to.
