who's there?

*outside the university--a man with a flight jacket and messenger bag slung loosely over one shoulder, walking towards the park. it's a nice day, so when he gets there he sits on a bench, shrugs off the jacket and takes out his reading for class, today Emerson's Compensation. he tucks up his knees and balances the book awkwardly as he takes scrawly ( Read more... )

*Francisco's furlough has been over for a while, but he still gets occasional days off--things have been dull while the brass has been getting the old watchtower refurbished, and so Francisco sometimes has free time for city-prowling. during one such excursion, he'll see a familiar face and trot over to the bench. his voice is warm, as always, but he softens the habitual carelessness* Hey, stranger. It's been strange not having you around.

Typist: Sorry about that. ^_^;;

(History majors are all made of awesome. Seriously.)

*grins a bit sadly* I know. It's damned weird having to deal with all these students - I figured I'd be with you lot for the next few years. How's everyone?

Typist: 'S all right, this will probably work out. Otherwise there's always retcon - if it doesn't work he could be not-on-furlough.

Bored. *smile* Feel like we ought to be baking you cookies or something, just to fill time.

Not a bad idea. I like chocolate chip best. *closes book* Do you know when you go back?

Typist: By the way, can I assume we're at the same time in the game as we are in RL? Bernardo's a bit religious.

Back where? Back to the tower? Monday.

Typist: Works for me! And Francisco likes chocolate. He's a bit ... lapsed. ^_^;;

You're not back in Russia? Thank God. I don't get the orders anymore - we're back for good? *slips back into using "we" unconsciously*

*nods* They moved the whole unit back here, and we're going to be stationed in the tower once they can get the plumbing figured out. Can't be that hard to throw in a few pipes, right?

I wouldn't be surprised if they're saying it's just the plumbing while they try to hide the really obvious structural problems. *makes a face* Not to worry you or anything.

Yep, you're probably right. Still, nice to think it's the plumbing.

Anyway, it's better than Murmansk.

*a little grin* Iraq would've been better than Murmansk. At least it would've been warm. But it looks like we're pulling out of everywhere, getting the troops home.

Good thing, too. *doesn't say, but they both know, I think, that they lost a friend or two there*

Typist: I've established upthread that Bernardo lost his arm when their base was bombed - does that fit with what you'd been thinking?

*just nods, a little distant for a moment--then snaps out of it* So, look at you! With a little book and everything.

Typist: I've actually been sort of stymied. Things have been boring there--probably less a bombing than a bomb going off by accident. Or that's what the official story is, anyway. There are a dozen people who will swear it was the Russians.

*wry face* Never would have thought it, would you?

Typist: The way I'd been seeing it, Francisco was not there when the bomb went off - at the embassy? on patrol? but in any case not at base. Bernardo seems quite sure it was the Norwegians, and it's not as if it's illogical to have the Norwegian military up there as well, it's far closer to Norway than Denmark. He could be wrong, of course. But he really does not like Forti.

Also, has Francisco been to college?

Nah, you were always the smart one. Seriously.

Typist: That makes sense, I guess. Francisco's good at not being around when important things happen. XD

Nope. He might give it a shot when he gets out of the military.

Didn't think I'd be taking up the studying again so soon, though.
