"reading" & reading

Feb 24, 2009 09:13

it's been a long time since i was able to sit down and read a book. i either can't find the time, or i fall asleep 2 pages into what i've started to read. the last book i tried to read was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows immediately after it came out, and still hadn't finnished it when it turned 2009.  I missed reading.  I missed knowing how HP turned out specifically.  I had two books that lisa sent home with me when i visited her back at the end of summer that i desperately wanted to read, but couldn't find the time.

Since moving to Murfreesboro, the drive time to and from work is extremely more than i was used to where i lived with adam in the condo.  that was in nashville proper and i only took backroads and it took 15 minutes and there was rarely any accidents to cause traffic.  Now it takes me generally about an hour and 10 minutes to get to work and an hour and 20 minute to get home if there are no major holds ups.  so that's about 2.5 hours travel time a day, 13.5 a week - if there are no hold ups and no accidents and that is a rarity.

I have been disenchanted with music lately.  I have not found anything in a long time that gets my heart in a pitter patter over it and that is sad.  I still love my old music, of course, but you can only listen to the same shit over and over again.  at the same time, when talking to my therapist we were discussing how to keep my stress level and rage down during travel times to and from work.  with my boredom of music to whisk me away and with my low patience level with drivers i seem to get really worked up in traffic.  so she suggested that i look into maybe doing some audio books.  i wasn't enthused about it, but i said i would try it.  at christmas time i joined a netflix like audio books rental system:  www.simplyaudiobooks.com.  I told bobby i'd give it a try because i didn't feel it necssary to spend tons of money buying books that i might never listen to again.

i fucking love it.  in the last 2 months i have "read" more books than i did for the span of 3 years.  i finnished HP, neil gaiman's new  "the graveyard book", into the wild, and am now halfway through a book called downtown owl.  even last night i started a paperbook (!) when bobby went to sleep.  we generally crawl in bed around 8:15 and watched an episode of futurama and then he goes to sleep (since he gets up at 4am).  most of the time i'm not sleepy quite yet, so last night i situated myself up with one of the books lisa lent me, "how to kill a rock star" and had a small night light behind me, and i read for an hour.  and i loved it.

as lame as it sounds, i am excited about the possibility of catching up on my reading!
