Stole'd from lieu_murphyWhile it's autumn on my side of the world, it's spring on House's side of the world. Which means one thing: babies

Wilson suggests surrogacy. House asks Wilson if he's freakin' nuts. That idea is quickly nipped in the bud after they get into another explosive argument over who's sperm would do the walking. They make a few more trips out over the next few weeks to check the kids out more and each time, House is drawn to Alex. In the end, Wilson is, too.
Two months later, they're signing the adoption papers for Alex House - House's surname because he argues that he spotted the kid first, therefore the kid gets his name. Alex is a timid boy, small for his age and doesn't say much for the first week he's with House and Wilson. He was taken away from his mother when he was three and a half; she was a heroin addict and she lost custody of her son after he was discovered to be malnourished and neglected.
Within three weeks, Alex comes out of his shell more and House and Wilson realise they have a bit of a terror on their hands. Tantrums, anger issues in which household items end up broken while Alex is on the warpath - Wilson freaks out yet again that they'd made a huge mistake and House refuses to admit Wilson is right by persisting with Alex as much as possible, even though he's close to tearing his hair out.
It takes several months to get Alex's behaviour under control, with child intervention therapy and Wilson coercing House with threats to go with him to parenting classes. On Alex's fifth birthday, they take him camping, which he's never done before in his life, and Wilson takes him canoeing while House shows Alex how to fish. Turns out Alex doesn't like doing either of those things, though he has huge fun with Wilson and House by the campfire at night, making schmores. That's the first night Alex calls Wilson and House 'Dad', which weirds Wilson out while House is secretly touched to the point where he actually is lost for words for about ten minutes.
By the time Alex is five and a half, House and Wilson decide to move in together properly, though they have separate bedrooms for the nights they hate each other's guts. Alex catches them having sex one night, which leads to a lot of embarrassed fussing from Wilson to shoo Alex back to bed while House points and laughs at Wilson for the rest of the night once he gets over the initial humiliation - which results in another epic fight.
Alex is in kindergarten when he comes home from school and says the teacher told him to stop telling lies when he said he had two daddies. House straightens this out by going down to the school himself to "have a word" with the teacher - Wilson attempts to talk House out of it, knowing how much damage House can cause. He loses, of course. And when House comes back home, he announces at dinner that he made sure Alex's "moron kindergarten teacher" would never make the same mistake again.

It's pretty fantastic -- and just the way that I could picture it going down. I was hoping you wouldn't go the surrogacy route; not that I don't think it's admirable or a good thing, just that with the two of them? Well, like you pointed out, it'd be a slap-fight as to who gets to take the lead. Plus, I don't think that either Wilson or House would be comfortable inviting a "third party" into it. Wilson would probably fall in love with her. House would probably nail her on one of the nights Wilson works late.
I like how it's not perfect. It's very real, very accessible. Kids aren't easy. But I think both Wilson and House are stubborn enough to try and make the best life possible for that little boy.
Plus, with surrogacy, I picture neither of them being comfortable with committing genetically. They're two guys that are always, always going to hold onto some kind of escape route, "just in case". And committing genetically to a child would take away that choice. Not that adoption wouldn't take it away, but you get what I mean, right? And yeah - you have to meet with the surrogate, and Wilson would likely feel compelled to visit her frequently to make sure everything was alright... and end up in a situation that just gets way too sticky. Because as much as House and Wilson love each other, they're not exactly nice to each other.
I now totally want to keep writing this random!universe now. >_>
I don't have a lot of experience with AU, but it would be interesting to see how these two adjust to raising a kid together. Especially given the circumstances you've outlined -- 'seems like the two of them just realized that they were comfortable with one another, but throw a kid into the mix? It's terrible, but I think they're both looking for something in that kid that they can't get out of one another. And maybe that's the worst possible reason to have a kid in the first place, but by god. if things were perfect it wouldn't be House and Wilson.
