Looks like it! I grew up in your area (Northern VA/DC/MD) and those critters haunt my memories of childhood summers. They're not particularly human-aggressive, but seriously, their size alone was enough to cow me into leaving them a wide berth as a kid.

Yeah, I read the wiki article when I was researching, it made me feel just a tiny bit bad about having killed it. Just a tiny bit, mind... it's still too big to exist on the same planet as me. *shudders*

Hah, right? They may be relatively harmless, but the sheer fact that they look somewhat like a giant hornet or yellowjacket makes me want to stay far, far away.

Yeah, I was sure it was a hornet before I looked it up. Now I'm just very, very glad it wasn't a hornet (or even a yellowjacket).
