[Today, Sayo feels sporatic. It happens, honest! Even if it's not... very often...

But at least it happens! Today she's wearing a dress Buffy had given her-a lovely sundress. And even though it's been raining off and on today, it's the warm, welcoming kind that make wearing such an outfit easy and breezy. Fortunately she remembers what rain is today ( Read more... )

Fireworks do exist. They're quite popular during times of celebration.

...I'm sure someone somewhere could probably whip some up, even if the Malnosso aren't decent enough to provide any.

... You can just make them? Really? They're not some sort of magic?

[Seriously, bro, those are like stars in the sky. That's hexen stuff. 8U]

In some worlds, they might be. Not in mine. They're simple enough to make, really.

...do you know what gun power is, Sayo?

Gun... powder...?

[It's been a while since she's dealt with guns, since her draft.

And... she's forgotten them entirely, really. It happens.]

I'm afraid I don't.

It's fine, Sayo. I'll...try to explain as best as I can, then.

Gunpowder is a mix of...minerals? Chemicals? [Any of those ringing a bell, Sayo?] When mixed in the right quantities, gunpowder is quite, um, explosive.

Most fireworks contain at least a small amount.

[Not gonna lie, most of those are going waaaay over my head. But okay.]

... Explosive? That doesn't sound good. Are they dangerous?

[He's sorry, Sayo T_T.]

In the wrong hands and under the wrong circumstances...which is, admittedly, most of them...yes.

However, when handled carefully, it's the main ingredient in fireworks.

Ah, so it's what makes it grow bigger in the sky?

And what allows it to get up into the sky in the first place.

I admit, the...actual workings of how they create colors and designs does escape me.

Mm, it really is almost like magic.

But I didn't know they could make designs.

Oh, yes. Suns and trees and animals and even words. Magic would certainly be a simpler explanation.

Amazing! It sounds amazing.

I take it you've seen them a lot, Giles-san? In your world?

Not terribly often. They were reserved for large scale celebrations and the like, generally.

But when celebrations came about, then yes. They were very popular.

And what kind of celebrations were popular, in your world?

Well, the one where you were most likely to see fireworks was to celebrate the birthday of a country. It was meant to mark the day whenn the country was established as a special occasion.

Country... That's the land you were born on, right? Like how I'm from Japan?
