Which would you prefer to hear about first: the living or the dead?

... I-I would think the living is the only thing people know much of.

[If they only knew...]

The two dominant creatures during the time of my rebirth were vampires and humans. Most of the vampire clans had been hunted down to near extinction, having grown far too feral and primal to survive. Those were offspring of my brethren grew stronger yet twisted depending on who ruled their particular clan.

[Holy crap, a little at a time, bro, she's not as savvy as some are.]

Ah-vampires? What are those?

[She kind of forgot about learning of them, prior. :|a]

[Oh, how blissfully naive some of these commoners were.]

At our most base and primal design, we are those who drink the lifeblood of the living. Most commonly, it was humans who served as prey for vampires. The blood is drunken via biting the neck using our elongated upper fangs and then draining it. How it is drained often varied from one vampire to the next.

[You don't know the half of it, with her.]

Ah, I see... but... what is blood, if you don't mind my asking?

[See, told you.]

[...just what sort of being was this?]

Blood is the life essence that flows through the veins of nearly all living beings. Cut a man, and he will bleed. Tear his heart from his chest, and blood will flow no more. We vampires fed upon blood to empower us and give us strength.

[Maaaan, she totally knew this during the draft, too. :(

BUT ALAS-]

Ah, right, I see. Then I have that, too? Blood?

[We'll get to your creepy vampire thing eventually.]

[What strangeness...? How...?]

That depends on what you happen to be. Are you a living being?

Oh, yes, I am! I'm just not sure if I have blood or not, is all... I don't recall if I do, anyway...

[The strangeness of this conversation seemed to unnerve me. How could one not know if they had blood or not?]

You surely must. The only creatures that lack blood are the dead and certain demons, and you have stated you are neither one of those.

Ah, then I probably do! I may have just forgotten.

How could one not know what they are or what flows through their veins? To forget such a thing, to forget what makes a person or their roots...surely this must be maddening!

[Or perhaps...was it I who had truly forgotten what I had renounced during that fated encounter?]

Maddening...? I don't think so, for me personally... [Why would it be? :|] I just tend to forget so many things, it's not surprising at all that I'd forget something like that... I'll have to write this down and have a visit at the library later.

But...how? Memories are what holds a person together, keeps them sane when all else is crumbling away! To forget what one is so easily...the mere idea is frightening to me.

Well, I have a lot of people around me that I can force myself to remember. But remembering them, I suppose... they help me keep pieces of myself. While I forget many things, they pull me back and remind me what I'll always be.

That's my belief, at least.
