Tribbles eat and reproduce, as a rule, although the Malnosso did something to this one to prevent that second part from happening. They thrive, actually; they'll eat almost anything, lass.
They---don't. They don't stop, and it's a very great problem indeed. Their ability to repopulate to the point of overpopulation is a strange evolutionary glitch, but with no natural defenses it was probably in their interest to make sure there was always a lot of 'em.

We've found some creative ways to keep their population under control and hence prevent them from destroying the universe, but research in that area is ongoing. Perhaps they are a bit like your mushi, lass?
BAH, nonsense! |Dwhats_a_sneezeMarch 28 2011, 00:58:28 UTC
Oh, yes. The mushi I'm most familiar with happens to enter the ear and feed on people's memories: those ones all self-populate, so they're actually alike in that regard!
O-oh! Hmmm, well, I make a lot of notes and then follow a very careful routine. If you keep something in mind often, the mushi will find it too valuable to eat; that's how I remember my son, and many of the friends I've made here.
Oh, he's just in-between at this point. Not quite either! Though he's still young enough for me to worry about him constantly, while I'm stuck here. I've been reassured that time's not the same here as it is home, but I suppose it's just a mother's way.

[It's in my brain! 8D]
But do they ever stop producing, where you're from? I imagine it could be difficult to keep them as pets, if they multiply so much...
