[Sayo returns from the tunnels, and it's like a welled up pressure in her chest finally dissipates into something more manageable-to go from a battlefield of bodies to a clean, cold forest that takes the air right out of her... she almost feels detached from reality, for the return home. Nothing left physically but a bandaged arm. A stitched up cut ( Read more... )

[Ah.]

...Archie-san. How are you feeling? Better now, I hope?

Much better. You're an excellent surgeon.

Ah, who, me? I'm much more suited to weaving, really! [She chuckles, features softening in relief.] I'm glad to hear you're doing alright. Make sure you rest plenty, all right? Or I'll have to drag you to the clinic myself.

Of course. I wouldn't want that!

Good. You're as smart as I thought you were, Archie-san!

But if you ever need anything-I'm always willing to cook up a little something for someone while they're resting!

[AH, BACKFIRING GOOD INTENTIONS!]

That's not a very good joke, you know! I'll be having heart attacks far too often for my own good!

[Oh come on, Sayo, what's a little gallows humor?] I don't know. If you had to live with my cooking for a couple of months, you'd be just as desperate as I am.

[She can not compute gallows humor, okay?! ;~;]

Oh, no! You're a bad cook?

[She's very amused by this thought, actually.]

I'm an unmarried man who lived on a ship from eleven to twenty-five. I'm a terrible cook.

That's no good! I'll have to have you come to the Seventh Heaven and learn a few things!

[Sayo, you're up against an unmotivated bachelor. He'll gripe about his own cooking, but learning to cook is a Herculean task even this ex-POW war vet cannot fathom.] Well. It's just myself I live with, so I don't think I should waste your time.

[Regardless, she'll do her bestest!!]

Oh, nonsense, it's always a good idea to know how to cook! In fact, I've found cooking can help with boredom and relax you if you're feeling tense! And after all, there's a never-ending list of things to learn from it~

[granted, 'never-ending' is especially clear for her, since never-ending = 100 recipes, forget some, re-learn.]

[While he's trying to scrounge up another excuse, it occurs to him that Jack Sparrow's idea of cooking for his sweetheart might have been a good one, if he'd known how to cook. Still, there's something he can't quite get past.]

But I'm a man.

[Not that men in his time never learned to cook, because the cooks who were considered the best? Men. But they didn't generally learn their trade from women.]

[And yet another thing she'd forgotten: that sexisms in old times are as strong as always.]

.... Why would that matter?
