The crazy thing is that it was originally a love song. There was one version for dudes to sing about ladies (Eily Dear), and one version for ladies to sing about dudes (Danny Boy). Only the latter is widely performed nowadays, and we’ve pretty much forgotten how incredibly gay it is for a male singer to use those lyrics…

Eh, this happens all the time with traditional music. House of the Rising Sun was originally a song about a lady falling for a good-for-nothing and, ultimately, becoming a prostitute (warning other women not to make the same mistake). Someone made a Perspective Flip about the aforementioned good-for-nothing and it just stuck.

Found it- original vs. the version popularised by The Animals. They’s similar, but I agree that the original is more interesting.
