And it's actually good.
- The developer, producer, storyboard artist, creative director and general overlord of the show is Lauren Faust. She's the wife of the creator of The Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, and has countributed heavily to both of her hubby's shows. This in itself bodes extremely well.
- The main character is actually kind of fun to watch in the pilot, because she's a a studious loner Grumpy Bear who nobody listens to but actually right. My god, how often do you have main characters like that? I mean she gets less antisocial in the second half, but still.
- Speaking of which, ALL of the ponies have distinct personalities. VERY distinct personalities. Say hello to Tomboy!Rainbow Dash and cowgirl!Applejack, especially. Compare to G1, where the focus is on a human girl and there are so many ponies their personalities blur together, and G3, where there are less characters but they still manage to be rather generic.
- The show pokes fun at the sugary girliness of ponyland. Several ponies actually groan when Pinkie Pie begins to sing.
- BOY PONY and GRANNY PONY are among Applejack's hugeass family. Yay for pony diversity!
- Pony mythology, and probably the first vaugely vilianous pony in MLP ever. Also, alicorns are essensially godess-princesses. That's awesome.
- at the end it looks like we're going to see some magical girl action in future episodes.
