ADRIC: "Are you sure?"
DOCTOR: "This is life. Nothing's sure."
Overview
The season 18 finale, this is the second story in the loose trilogy that began with The Keeper of Traken and concludes with Castrovalva, the season 19 opener, so although it can be watched as a standalone story, it makes much more sense if you watch The Keeper of Traken first

Well, at least Adric likes math. :)
That said, I did get the impression that the Doctor always planned to picked up Adric after the adventure was over, even if he'd regenerated by then.
I like this episode, but don't love it. Mind you, I'm a rarity, in that I quite like Adric. Though he is hit-or-miss, depending on the which story he's in.
The things that bug me most about this are probably the one-time signal thing you mentioned and that the Master's message would take a very long time to get to the other races if it was broadcast on radio waves (and I thought it was). The control bracelet didn't work for me, either, at all. But I enjoyed how much Adric wanted to help, and how poorly the Monitor's excuses for keeping him and Nyssa out of the TARDIS during the would-be-chamelon-fix were received.
I still think Five, Nine, and Seven got the best send-outs, though. Five and Nine for being fantastic, and Seven for being so horrifying, so emotionally disturbing (as intended).

For sure - but what the Doctor plans and what takes place are rarely all that similar! And when regeneration comes into play, all bets are off.
I quite like Adric, too - I mean, Matthew Waterhouse's deficiencies as an actor are evident, but the throughline of the character always makes perfect sense to me, and I enjoy watching the development of his relationship with the Doctor and how it changes post-regeneration. I'm eternally sad that Adric never got to grow up and mature into the man he could have been, never got to fulfil his potential.
