I don't know if I'm right here, but I'm detecting some small appreciation for Ian? Heh. :-D

And, yes. I suppose there must be people out there who don't like The Romans, but it's hard to imagine. And it's not surprising it's a bit Carry On when it all came about due to Cleo...

But, yes, marvellous - and I love this team TARDIS. I love Ian and Barbara obviously, but I adore Vicki and her enthusiasm - and the way she and the Doctor act together! Wicked little partners in crime, the pair of them.

:D Is my partiality showing? I do like a man in stubble, I will admit. ;) I also really covet Barbara's hair and costume in this story...

This is one of my favourite eras of the show - I love the characters and the group dynamics and the experimental air about it all, before the show settled into more of a pattern of what was expected of it. Vicki is just the cutest thing and such a good partner for the Doctor, the characters just gel perfectly - although I do regret that Susan couldn't have been written a bit more like this.

If it took 34 days for Barbara's slave convoy to travel to Rome, though, one has to assume that it must take about the same length of time to make the reverse journey

I know I'm a bit late here (just found this site today), but it took 34 days for the the slave convoy (from Gaul), not for Barbara and Ian. They were picked up very near the end of the journey. The Doctor only packed enough food for two or three days when he left.

My userpic says it all, the Doctor is never more charming to me then when he delights in his own petty vandalism, feats of strength, or pulling one over on an opponent. The juxtaposition of the elderly first Doctor talking about how great he is at fighting is just hilarious as is the scene where he pulls the wool so far over everyone's eyes at Nero's court by playing a melody that none of them had ears fine enough to hear. I completely believe that Ian and Barbara are in love and go onto a long and happy life together, and I actually love that they never feel the need to define their relationship out loud. They start out as firm friends and their shared adventures bond them more than any amount of dating ever could - they are each other's entire world, more and more so as the show progresses, and I love watching them together in this story, just enjoying one another's company, and how throughout their separation all they can think of is each other. I completely believe in their love. In one of the commentaries somewhere, William Russell says that they played it as teetering on the cusp of a romance, and that comes across beautifully ( ... )
