CHARACTER NAME: Xi’an Coy Manh aka Karma
FANDOM: Marvel-616
CHRONOLOGY: X-Men: Manifest Destiny #1
BACKGROUND:
Xi’an (pronounced ‘Shan’) led a very rough life from a young age. Born to her parents in Vietnam, her and her twin brother, Tranh, and her two younger twin siblings, Leong and Nga, were forced to move around the country throughout their childhood. Their father had been a low ranking officer in the Vietnamese army and was often given the responsibility of high risk and low end jobs that often put him and his family in danger. The family followed unconditionally though, and continued to do so until Xi’an was in her teens and her powers manifested. One of the North Vietnamese officers had tried to murder Tranh, and it prompted her ability to psionically attack and possess people to emerge. It turned out Tranh also shared this same ability, and unlike his sister, he decided to use it to kill the attacking officer.
Tranh later told their uncle, a Vietnamese General, what he and his sister were able to do, but before he could do anything about it, Xi’an’s family fled Vietnam for refuge from warfare. The uncle saved Tranh, but Xi’an had to use the powers she feared to free her family and get them on a boat to leave. When fleeing the country though, they were attacked by Thai pirates (seriously). The pirates, in typical pirate fashion, decided to kill all the men and rape all the women. Both of her parents died during this time, and Xi’an was left to fend for herself and her younger siblings.
Sometime shortly after, Xi’an arrived in the United States and somehow met up with her Uncle and Tranh. But when Xi’an found out that they gotten involved in the mob, she refused to stay with them. She met up with a priest who ran a program to help ‘boat people’ (thanks Claremont for that politically correct analysis), and began to lead a normal life with his help until her uncle decided to pop up about a year later and kidnap her younger siblings. He wanted Xi’an to use her powers to help with his crime op, but she refused. Instead, she used her mutant abilities to mind control Spider-Man to help her (she’d been under the incorrect assumption that he was a criminal at the time). While she was able to make him get her siblings back, Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four decided to confront her about the use of her powers. When they learned her side of the story, they were sympathetic and eager to help out but Tranh-the-evil-twin was having none of that. He used his abilities to force the Fantastic Four into fighting Spider-Man and the heroes were beating the pulp out of each other until Xi’an put an end to it. She killed her brother by using her psionic prowess to absorb his life force. Upset and just slightly traumatised, Spidey sent the poor girl and her siblings to see Professor Xavier in an attempt to help her learn control.
At 19 years old, Xi’an was very eager to master the power that she was so frightened of; her first and foremost concern was to protect Leong and Nga and to raise them in a proper household as a family. Xavier was very acknowledging of this and not only offered Xi’an leadership of his brand new team (the original New Mutants) but a job, schooling, and an apartment for them all to live. Xi'an was always very appreciative of this, and began bouncing around the busy schedule day in and day out. It was at this time she took on the codename 'Karma'.
During her short-lived stay with the New Mutants, Xi'an began developing stricter control over her powers. She was able to put her abilities to use in new ways (for example, controlling multiple people at once while still being well in control of her own body, and forcing Cannonball to use his powers when trapped frozen by a Sentinel frigi-beam). The new team had a few adventures together, most notably against a Brood-possessed Professor Xavier, and a cross-country battle against Viper and the Silver Samurai to free their captive teammate, Dani Moonstar.
During the rescue, Xi'an learned of her uncle's further involvement in the mob. Nguyen Ngoc Coy also revealed that he knew of Dani's whereabouts, and that if Xi'an agreed to give him her services (as previously offered), he would tell the New Mutants where Dani was. Xi'an reluctantly agreed. However, when they found Dani, they were ambushed by both Viper and the Silver Samurai and got caught in a massive explosion. The blast threw the New Mutants into the ocean, and Xi'an was the only one unable to resurface. The teens thought her dead and were devastated.
Little did they know, Xi'an was alive. Oddly, the Professor and X-Men knew this, but made no attempt to search for her. Cerebro was unable to detect her mutant signature, and it was later revealed that she'd been under the cover and control of the psychic entity known as the Shadow King. During her time as prisoner, Shadow King had Karma move all over the world to build an army of minions. These slaves would feed her food all day, everyday to the point where poor Xi'an gained well over 500 pounds. Having become naturally very lazy, 'Karma' then ordered her minions to provide her entertainment by forcing gladiator-style fights in the arenas they gained internationally. Eventually Karma's former teammate Sunspot and another New Mutant, Magma, were captured and forced into a fight. When the New Mutants tracked them down, they'd discovered both Dazzler and Kitty Pryde under Karma's control as well. They were devastated to learn of their friends' involvement and chased her all over the world to stop her. Eventually Xi'an was able to engage in a psychic battle with the Shadow King on the Astral Plane and won. She was free of his control, but not the morbidly obese body he gave her. Understandably, she was devastated and depressed, and completely unwilling to face her loved ones looking that way.
The X-Man Storm decided the kids needed a vacation, and upon taking them, was attacked. Magik lost control of her teleportation powers, and Karma was transported to the past and left to fend for herself in a desert. Still morbidly obese, she lost the desire to fight for her life and was ready to die alone there. However, a young girl in trouble came across her and asked for help. Xi'an is a nurturer by nature, and perhaps due to her separation from Leong and Nga, felt obligated to protect the young girl and stay with her until they were able to find her help. The pair walked through the desert for months until Xi'an was thin again, and continued on until she met up with the New Mutants. It was then she learned that the 'little girl' and the 'desert' had been one of Loki's illusions the entire time. The Trickster sent the New Mutants back to their proper time line and home, but Xi'an was able to keep the body she worked so hard to get back. With her will strong again, Karma was able to rejoin the team.
The stay was short lived again. A few months later the apartment her family was living in was destroyed in an explosion and her siblings went missing. Using her powers to follow leads, Xi'an followed many trails that ended no where. She'd gone as far as possessing a member of the Hellfire Club to gain access to their information computers, but still nothing. She got desperate by that point, and decided that her crime lord uncle was her only option left. The man had connections to people internationally and always seemed to be behind her family's problems in the past. Heartbroken, Xi'an left Dani a letter of apology saying she needed to quit the team.
Xi'an spent the next few years living in Madripoor working for Nguyen's organization. Most of her time there was spent doing dirty work for him just like Tranh had, bringing her all sorts of inner conflict and shame. Fortunately, she had a few run-ins with Wolverine, and was able to aid him in a few missions to ease her mind. It wasn't until Xi'an witnessed a mass-slaughter of hundreds of children that she finally quit working for Nguyen. Seeing the deaths of those who reminded her of her very own siblings was too much for her to handle, and it was worse when it was revealed that Nguyen was the cause. Servicing the murderer was no longer worth it. She continued her search for her siblings on her own.
It tooks years, but eventually the determined woman tracked them down. They were in the 'care' of Spiral and the Hellfire Club and had been experimented on. The twins had been used to find a cure for the X-Gene and were given body modifications by Spiral in her Body Shoppe. The entire operation was eventually traced back to Viper's command. The same woman who had been present when Xi'an's life in America began its downward spiral apparently had a deep grudge against Karma's family. She was able to free the kids, but Beast was unable to reverse the work Spiral had done. They left to live a normal life again together in the U.S.
Karma popped up a few times afterward, notably at a concert where she met up with Dani again. It was there she revealed a new look and outed herself as a lesbian to her friends. It was also revealed that her siblings were being treated for their conditions and healing. Once finished with the treatment, the family moved to Chicago to settle down so that Xi'an could go to university. There she bumped into Kitty Pryde, and the two took down a Sentinel op. Xi'an developed feelings for Kitty, and it was hinted that their friendship may have been something more.
After graduating, Karma returned to the Institute to work at Dani's insistence. She was without Kitty, but brought the twins with her. Xi'an taught French and simultaneously acted as the school's librarian. After Cyclops and Emma Frost took over the school from Xavier, Xi'an was assigned a squad of mutants to teach. Her squad consisted of many of the younger students, namely the ones too young to put their powers to use in combative situations and were not allowed to use the Danger Room. Along with Dani, Amara, Jean-Paul and Rahne, Xi'an helped run the programs for the student body and helped get them through until the Decimation hit. Xi'an retained her mutant powers, but the enrollment went down so low that the need for the teaching staff was nonexistent. Xi'an eventually faded away from the Institute, and left with her siblings to live on their own once more.
They stayed together without issue for at least another year. The news of Kitty's death came back to Karma, and Xi'an took it horribly. Her powers had also started acting up and manifesting to even stronger levels at this time, so she was left with no other choice but to seek help. Emma Frost was able to give that to her, and Xi'an moved out to San Francisco to join the X-Men in their all-new 'mutant haven'. She's since become a member of the regular roster.
PERSONALITY:
Despite all the hardship in her life, Xi'an is a generally optimistic and determined woman. She's only ever shown weak will and desperation in extreme circumstances (being stranded in the desert, for example) and always puts the needs of others before her own. Nurturing by nature, she has a slight tendency to mother people-- including her friends and teammates. She was always the oldest of the group, so there was a sense of responsibility on her part. This only grew stronger when she became a teacher; at one point she'd taken over three different squads in addition to her own to ensure that every child was in the company of an adult. This stressed her out greatly, but she worked through it for the kids' sake.
However, the nurturing nature seems to dominate most aspects of her life. Leong and Nga's well being and upbringing are always the top priority for her. Xi'an would quickly leave behind her friends and teams if her siblings needed her; her family is rooted deep. Since she was in charge of the twins and responsible for them at such a young age, she became used to overlooking everything. She is very organized and needs a large degree of control over her life. It ironically goes hand in hand with her powers, which she's never abused unless absolutely necessary. Karma has a great deal of respect for other people - both human and mutant alike - and isn't likely to provoke a fight.
Socially she can be a bit awkward, yet somewhat bossy. Her more intimate emotions and weaknesses are always something kept to herself. However, once she gets to know people really well that bossy and nurturing side is louder and actually more endearing to the people around her.
Lastly, her greatest fear, besides losing her siblings again, is losing control of her body to the Shadow King. That instance severely traumatised Xi'an, and the thought of becoming a slave or victim again scares the daylights out of her. This event combined with her earlier rape leaves her feeling very shameful and embarrassed, as she despises looking weak.
CLASS: Hero, though I doubt Xi'an will keep her tags. She'll most likely take up residence at the X-Mansion, offering her services as a teacher. She loves working with children, so it would be a natural choice.
SUPERHERO NAME: Karma!
ALTER EGO: Xi'an Coy Manh, teacher/librarian.
POWER: Karma employs a great deal of psionic power. While not traditionally telepathic, she possesses a few similar abilities. The core of her power is the ability to possess people. This is done by injecting her own psyche into that of her 'host'. While doing so, Karma can: recollect/erase/bring forth memories; control thoughts, actions, and emotions; speak through her host's mouth using either her own voice or theirs; and cause her host to 'black out' and become unable to recollect their time spent possessed. Later on, Karma displayed the ability to summon psychic energy in the form of a shield. This shield leaves her immune to psionic attacks.
Certain instances have proven Karma's abilities difficult to use. For example, more experienced telepaths would be able to defeat her in psychic combat. Aliens are also immune to this ability.
A Note: Karma does not use her powers unless provoked or absolutely necessary. To prevent god-moding, these abilities will not at all be effective over the comm/network, and only in person barring other players' permission. I'll put a post in her journal for basic permissions, however I'll probably only end up ever using the abilities on a case by case basis (logs) while working closely with other muns to make the experience as fair and comfortable as possible. :)
COMMUNITY POST SAMPLE:
Mon Dieu! C'est impossible! How can it be that I am flying to San Francisco at one moment, and in an entirely new place the next? It is the sort of thing I had come to expect from the likes of Magik, but I was under the impression that was no longer an issue!
Oh non! Leong? Nga? If the two of you are here, you need to answer me this instant! I cannot have you running around without someone there-- oh. Oh, someone please tell me that they've been brought here as well. They can't be safe on their own!
If anyone has seen two small children running around, please tell me! They are nine years old, and about four and a half feet tall with dark hair and eyes. I'm supposed to be taking them with me on the plane, but... mon dieu, can someone please just tell me what's going on!? I have no problems with assisting you all any other time, but right now I have priorities!
Ugh, this has got to be a nightmare!
THIRD PERSON:
The word 'hero' had many different connotations to Xi'an Coy Manh. She had been around patriots, international role models, vigilantes, mutant peace keepers, reformed villains, and charitable clergymen. All of which were deserving of their titles in their own ways, and all of which she respected to various degrees. But her? Xi'an had never been modest enough to label herself as such a thing. Yes, she had fought and trained with teams of her own, but never had she been considered a 'hero'. Responsibilities were just that: responsibilities. They were an obligation to be taken care of, and there were no questions about it.
This sort of responsibility being dropped in her lap made her extremely nervous. Xi'an did not ask to be here and she did not ask to be working for anyone. The right of having her own free will was something that she valued, and being forced into anything, no matter what it was, upset her. She'd been played with enough in her life! The armies, her uncle, the Shadow King; she'd have no more of it! Karma was no one's puppet!
The feeling of hopelessness consumed her. She would do anything in her power to find a way home and to get a grip over her life again; it was a personal goal she had set before being brought here, and now? Life was further from her hands and she felt just as useless as she had so many years ago as she lay dying in the desert. It was a time she never dared revisit, and she would have to get a hold of herself. Besting those who had denied her freedom had happened before, and Xi'an would see to it that she do it again. Playing the role of hero would be a simple distraction for her further plans to return home. She had to see Leong and Nga again; Xi'an could not bear to be apart from them.
Her life was her own; no one would take that away.
