It's a kind of key. A friend of mine, a wizard named Harry Dresden, has wards on his apartment powerful enough to slow down any big bads who try to get in without his permission. Powerful enough to kill your average human, no problem. The amulet lets me get through.

A lot. He's a pretty heavy hitter in the supernatural world. It took his door getting blasted through a few times for him to bone up his defenses. So both, really.
