Today I put in my spring/summer gardens. I'm not quite done yet, but I hauled in 14 cubic feet of composted mulch, 4 cubic feet of great soil. And I partially deconstructed the winter lasagna garden to pilfer some of the great soil and lawn clippings. Alas, my seedling starts for this season have been poor, to say the least. I have some Green Zebra tomatoes going, but that's about it. Everything else seems to have died. Peas planted in the covered container sprouted but died. I actually watched my pole beans, sprouted in a similar container, all the way up to first leaves pushing the roof of the container, shrivel and dry out in about an hour this afternoon. I'm not sure there's much hope for them.
Thus, I invested heavily in starter plants. 1/2 dozen or so Roma tomatoes, 1/2 dozen Mr. Stripey (heirloom), 1/2 dozen sweet white corn, 1/2 dozen yellow corn (both planted to help shield the family room window from sun). 10 or so marigolds, 2 cilantro, better than 6 spaghetti squash, a generic hot chili plant and a jalapeno. I still have an eggplant, a half dozen cucumbers and more a dozen more marigolds to plant tomorrow. I had thought I'd completely take out the winter garden, but I ran out of room in my two other gardens, and I still have cabbages, garlic and onions in there, so I plopped the jalapeno in there.
I'm optimistic. We'll see what happens. Wishing I had two more beds, and money for soil. More tomorrow.
