Rules of Creativity (well, more guidelines)

May 27, 2010 15:20

I was thinking about this, and I came up with a set of rules that I think are helpful to me and that I should follow more often. Chucking them out there into the void because why not.

The Rules

1. Don't create and analyze at the same time, they're different processes.
2. Quantity can and probably will lead to quality. Do a lot and some of it will be good.
3. Don't worry about plagiarism, or clichés. Just because you wrote it doesn't mean you have to publish it; just because you drew it you don’t have to put it on display.
4. If you create it, they will come. Do it for yourself first and foremost; no matter what you do, someone out there will like it.
5. Listen to criticism with a smile; take it in, don't be insulted. You can always disregard what doesn't matter to you.
6. Do it every day. Write a hundred words, draw for five minutes. Make it like brushing your teeth; you have to do it before you go to bed at night.
7. Save everything. You might want to go back to it later.
8. Sometimes you need to take a step back, and sometimes you need to look at it from a different angle.
9. Don’t let your message take over the work; let the work take on a message.
10. It won’t always be fun and cookies. Sometimes it will be work. Hard, hard work. But other times it will flow like the Amazon, and that’s what makes it worth it.
