The Cookie Resolution
“Mommy?” Marie climbed up on the bed, and gently patted Allison’s face.

“Hmm?” Allison said, blinking.

“What’s this word?” Marie brandished a spelling list, with one tiny finger pointing to a word.

“Resolution.”

“What’s it mean?”

“Um, well, it’s… um… did you ask Daddy?”

“Daddy’s in the shower,” Marie said.

“Oh. Well, okay. Resolution. Well, sometimes, on New Year’s, people make resolutions to change their behavior.”

“Like how you yelled at Bridgette that she had better stop spitting fake champagne at Ariel?”

“That wasn’t a resolution because I was the one who wanted Bridgette to change,” Allison said, amused by her daughter’s suggestion. “A resolution is something you decide to do.”

Marie tilted her head, her eyes blinking behind her glasses slowly as she considered Allison’s words. “Like how Daddy said he was going to get better at parking so he’d never get another scratch on the car door?”

Allison laughed. “When did your father say that?”

Marie’s eyes went wide. “Um, never. But maybe on Tuesday.”

“Yes,” Allison said. “That would count as a resolution.”

“Mommy? Did you make a resolution?”

“Do you think there’s something I need to change?” Allison asked, teasing.

“We could have cookies for breakfast,” Marie said.

“How about Lucky Charms?”

“That sounds like a resolution I could support,” Marie said formally, and then she grinned, and flung her arms around Allison’s neck.
