DAYTONA BEACH - A 20-year-old Ormond Beach man was killed earlier today after he drove under a tractor-trailer and the top of his truck was sheared off, police said.
Daytona Beach police spokesman Jimmie Flynt said that when officers arrived at the scene at Dunn Avenue and Bill France Boulevard just before 1 a.m, they discovered a red truck with the driver trapped inside. The man, Daniel Anthony Coluccio, was dead. Officers then saw a tractor-trailer driver who had been attempting to make a wide right hand turn from Dunn onto Bill France, whose rig was straddled across both southbound lanes, Flynt said.
According to a preliminary investigation, Coluccio, was headed north near the intersection and somehow slid under the tractor-trailer. When that happened, the top of Coluccio's truck was sliced off.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, Reuel Richard Pixley, 46, of Spring Hill, was not injured.
Coluccio is the son of George Coluccio, a former Ormond Beach police sergeant.
