Using marinades/rubs?

I thought of this last night while eating a big pork roast and wishing it had a bit more flavor,,, does marinading your meat, or using rubs work well with crock pots. I've never seen a recipe that's calls for it and wondered if maybe there's a reason.
Otherwise, I'd be all for some suggestions on making things more flavorful.
