What's the secret to good dumplings?

Hi folks

Awhile ago, I made a lovely stew with dumplings in the crock, and they came out perfect!

But the second time I did it, the dumplings were soggy and didn't cook properly. I'm not sure what I did that was different. I'm quite certain that I used the same recipe for the dumplings both times, so I'm thinking it was some other variable that led to the failure.

So, does anybody have any advice? Could it have been that the second stew was not as thick and got into the dough, making them soggy?
