Hi, I'm a newbie. I just bought my first slow cooker this weekend, hoping to eat better food (i.e. not prepared food products-- I don't really know much about cooking, I rely on them almost exclusively) and lower our high grocery bills. I have a lot of questions, but I'll start off with two.
First, can you or can't you use dairy products in a Crock Pot? I have four cookbooks from the library. Two say you can't, and to use condensed milk in a can, and two say you can. Which is it?
Second, what is a good substitution in stews and soups for wine? I dislike the flavor of wine and beer in food intensely. I've never met a dish that was an exception to this. Yet almost every recipe I find wants me to put wine in. Please tell me there's something I can sub in for it, or my slow cooking adventure will be short-lived indeed.
