Opposites
She had been the lover of too many men, he had married the only one that ever mattered. She had generous curves, he was thin as a rake. She educated the boy by letting him experiment with life, he explained experiments to raise his daughter.
They pretended not to judge each other.
- So you're taking him for a month to see if he's worth it ?
- I won't be the only one to decide, he answered with a quick glance at the pretty blonde girl who was showing their house to the potential apprentice.
The only thing they had in common was probably being parents.
Weaknesses
Their family was serving the Yao clan for decades now, and he had followed his father's steps for so long he sometimes forgot when it really started. He had listened, ingraining every word, and repeated over and over the message passed down through generations of bodyguards.
Never become too emotionally attached or get involved in something beyond professional connection.
Seeing his young Ran Fan vainly trying to stifle a laugh as she listened to the prince's (yet not always funny) jokes, Fu realized that maybe he hadn't passed the lesson that well.
However, who was he to fault his favorite granddaughter ?
Sisterhood
They had not waited for the main course to start talking about a potential marriage, thus Olivier had stormed out of the dining room with an empty stomach, complained the cook while saving supplies for later. As the family heir was leaving the house for good (with her sword as only luggage), the panicked chief intendant didn't care about his colleague's drama, yet the packed up diner disappeared from the kitchen.
Later that night, when Olivier climbed to her window, Catherine handed it to her older sister with a bright smile, after swearing she would not let their parents marry her against her will either. Olivier seemed satisfied with this promise and left again, with an awkward word of thanks and quick nod as a goodbye to the only relative she would miss.
Catherine chuckled. Olivier was really not fond of those things.
Absolution
"She told us she was sad whenever her father closed himself in his laboratory. We should have seen the signs," Edward muttered, more to himself than to Mustang who had ended the discussion by continuing down the steps.
For once his lieutenant didn't follow him, coming instead to a stop to make herself eye level with the brothers. If she didn't try to stop the upcoming storm, she knew they would drown in guilt under that endless rain.
"Alphonse, Edward. You couldn't know. Trust me, no one could."
Her words found their way, also offering redemption to a colonel who had been brutally reminded of the picture of a girl revealing her back.
Fabrics
She wasn't really paying attention to faces and unimportant speeches - on the contrary, she was surveying movements, first signs of an eventual attempt to assassinate her soon-to-be emperor. As a result, she wasn't seeing the painted cheeks of all the lined up concubines, domesticated fowls kept to be attracted to power like moths to the flame. She was more concerned with their ceremonial dresses (which came from all over the empire and ever farther), where they could easily hide knives and poisons.
Yet those soft silk with their elaborated pattern managed to stir the faintest envy in the girl who was utterly aware she would never be a princess - however Ran Fan ignored that Lin preferred by far the rough fabric of his bodyguard's uniform.
Magnetism
The Devil's Nest was crowded almost every night. Not only with melancholic people trying to drown their despair in a bottle nor hefty men uselessly challenging Roa at arm wrestling. No, there were also lots of girls brought by Greed - all of them pretty, utterly humans, and some times interested with Dolchatte, despite his total lack of reaction.
He was a canine chimera for a reason: he always went home when he was called - which meant every time Martel appeared, leaning against the back door, arms crossed, and a wild light in her eyes that always made him want to howl at the moon.
Strategies
Roy always smiled with imperceptible irony when Edward, convinced he had concocted the most brilliant idea in the world, decided to give earrings to his mechanic.
However, Fullmetal had no idea he was not the first one to choose this solution. Few years before, a young apprentice had given himself headaches just by looking for a present to give his master's daughter. Especially when her own library was already well-stocked and that he could under no circumstances show any commitment. Innocent earrings for her birthday had seemed to be a good compromise.
Hopefully, the ring would come soon enough.
Projection
Her almost automatic muttered answer when she heard his voice morphed into a weak cry when she understood not he was leaving her but also going to fight that monster.
"Master !" she objected in their native tongue.
During those dark hours in the manor, Riza had learned a little Xingese and some other languages to keep her mind away from less attractive thoughts. As a result, she was the only one in their borrowed car to see that the wounded girl in her arms was still trying to play her role.
Those children were too young for this, an unfair situation that sounded too familiar. The lieutenant slightly hugged Ran Fan with a fierce empathy, and swore to the girl's ear in a hesitant, rusty language that her prince would return.
Later on, when she left Roy to his apartment, she realized maybe she had only transposed her own hopes.
Goodbyes
Mustang pretended he hadn't see the Elrics leave the hospital, especially when they were supposed to have been brought to Central headquarters for a questioning, postponed (by the Colonel's suggestion) for several weeks now.
The brothers had taken the first cab to the station, but Edward made the car stop on the first bridge they crossed. Helping his brother out of the cab, he rummaged through his pockets, making Alphonse smile when he saw the well-worn pocket watch. Memories filled them both, but Edward stretched his arm behind his head to throw it as far are he could. The silver watch arched though sky to eventually land in the river with the smallest splash of water.
- And now ? asked Alphonse.
- We're going home.
Hopes
To celebrate the end of the brothers' journey, Kayal and his father were chosen as Youswell's representatives, as the Rockbell house was not big enough to accommodate the entire city. If the boy was glad to catch sight of May Chang, his hopes to tell her his delight vanished when he saw her on the arm of a man he had never saw before. It was a blonde girl beside him who happily answered his sullen questions.
"Well, it's Alphonse !" she laughed, as if the fact should be obvious.
Kayal eventually made the connection between that man and the armor he saw months before when he remembered Edward's explanations of the recent events in Amestris. Admitting defeat, he shrugged, but the little lady didn't consider their conversation over yet.
"My name's Elysia. What's yours ?"
Allosterism
He had seen Winry kneeling next to Den, who was being patted by Edward as the alchemist had returned for automail revision. The girl had muttered she was glad her friend was safe - and he had pretended not to notice as Ed's hand mysteriously slid over on hers.
Before they left the devastated Central headquarters, they had watched from afar as the lieutenant's dog came bounding up to her and Mustang, shaking their unsteady balance - even though there were holding each other so tightly it seemed they were a single being with four feet.
When Alphonse first came to Xing, Xiao Mei had been utterly shocked when she realized her master's friend could now be bitten, making May Chang panic despite all Alphonse's attempts, including an awkward hug, to calm her down.
Once left alone, Lin eventually declared to Ran Fan that they should perhaps get a pet too.
Truce
They had stopped trying to murder each other outright, but he could almost feel them exchanging deadly glares whenever he was not watching. Yet during their stay, May Chang and Ran Fan had agreed on a single subject:
The bathroom needed to be renovated.
And despite all of Knox's reservations, there was another blessed moment of agreement. Months after that damned "Promised Day" was over, the girls came back to Amestris. Dediced to match the action to the word, they actually modified almost everything in his bathroom. Together.
The decorating almost started another fight, but that's another story.
Bedtime
Noticing an treatise on alchemy poorly hidden behind some books of Ishvalan fairy tales, he sat on his now pouting daughter's bed. She glared at him - a look she had probably inherited from her mother - and sighed when she realized it wasn't helping at all.
"I can't do anything in this house," she complained.
"There are some rules you have to follow," he replied, trying to calm things down.
"I'm sure you never disobeyed," she sulked, still unsatisfied with his answer.
Edward choked but explained himself quickly as his daughter made a face, the girl being sure he was laughing at her.
"You know, one day Alphonse and I… We make a huge mistake."
Their discussion went on longer than he thought, but for once Winry did not care.
