I have a new favorite state park campground. Yes, you heard me correctly. State park campground -- those meccas of all that is car camping: far far too many noisy neighbors with their 10,000 screaming children and stereos and mega monster RVs with generators running late into the night...
Well, Warren Island is my kind of state park. On the park's
website under access is says: None. I love it. The only way on or off the island is by private boat.
All told it's only a 3.5 hour drive away and at the shortest a 3 mile paddle across an open channel to 10 campsites reservable
online. Each campsite is nearly perfect for someone including the huge group sites in a grassy field in the center of the island big enough for an entire scout troop. There is fresh water well and plenty of free carefully cut and stacked firewood available. The ranger even laid out a 4 inch thick bed of fresh wood shavings for my bed. I don't think camping has ever been this comfy and easy. And best of all, the weather gods smiled on us. Who would have thought that would happen in Maine in May?
We went seeking adventure and instead found a splendid vacation. The fond memories and tired muscles are the only evidence of exactly how many miles we paddled.
Anyone up for a weekend of kayak camping? I happen to know the perfect place and I'll gladly go back in a heartbeat.
