“Dad, can you drive us to the hospital?” Donghae asked his father but his mother but in.
“I’ll drive you.” She said sweetly and I wondered what Donghae meant by ‘I didn’t have to be nice’. “Let’s go,” she smiled as she grabbed her car keys and walked out the door, not saying goodbye to Donghae’s father. We both followed her, me being the only who said goodbye.
The car drive was awkward, neither me nor Donghae comfortable to say anything in front of his mother, but she clearly didn’t feel the same.
“...I’m sure she will be fine! They have the best doctors at this hospital! I once broke my foot when I was younger and they - ”
“Of course I will drive you!” His mother exclaimed happily, finally happy that she was able to meet her son’s new girlfriend.
“Thanks mum!” Hyukjae grinned as he looked down at his date and the girl smiled up shyly at him. The walked from the house, turning off the lights before they got into his mother’s old, banged up car.
“Excuse the mess!” She laughed as she pulled the door open, it creaking as she peeled it open. Hyukjae and the girl did the same, climbing into the back seat awkwardly, but Hyukjae’s mother didn’t get the memo.
“So...Where am I taking you? I know this really great restaurant near the town - I used to go with your father numerous times! Actually, I think we went there nearly every year for our anniversary? Yes,” She nodded as she thought back, “They used to know our names there! We were basically regulars! There used to be this hot waiter that I would stare at and your father use to always catch me out but it’s okay because -”
“Mum. MUM! God, woman, you really do get off the tangent don’t you?” Hyukjae butt in and the girl laughed.
“Sorry!” She laughed, keeping her eyes on the road. “Where to?”
“The bowling alley.” The girl said this time, getting more and more comfortable around Hyukjae’s crazy mother.
“Mum, shut up.” Donghae broke into her rant about useless, well, useless shit that nobody cared about. I giggled slightly before I saw the hospital and my laughter died instantly.
It was white. Everything was white. (Leeteuk would fucking love it here.) White walls, white furniture, white EVERYTHING.
“Hello. How can I help you?” The nurse asked us.
“I’m looking for my mother. Ms. Lee.” She typed a few words before nodding.
“She’s in room 309. Upstairs and to the left.” I nodded and ran upstairs, Donghae and his mother following me slowly, unsure if they should follow me.
“Stay here.” I muttered to them once we were outside the room. Nobody can ever prepare you for something like this. You don’t know what is going to happen and your heart races too fast, becoming one simple, continuous beat. My mother wasn’t dead, but that didn’t ease my fear. I inhaled deeply and held it before opening the door, procrastinating what I was yet to see.
The air was stale and cold. It should have been warm and inviting. It should have been comforting for people like me. I looked across the room. There she was. I stared at my mother, the damn woman who constantly reminded me that she went through a painful labour so I better be grateful. She seemed so broken, so depressing. The urge to throw myself at her and call her ‘Mummy’ was overwhelming, but I resisted it. I took a seat beside her bed and held her hand, it was so cold - a side effect of the blood loss. Her bandaged chest was hidden beneath the stiff, light green hospital gown. God, I fucking hated this place.
“Mum? Can you hear me?” I ran my thumb across her knuckles softly. “Well, I hope you can. Mum, I love you. I wouldn’t be who I am today if it weren’t for you. You’ve sculpted me into a man who I am proud to say is me, and it’s all because of you. You are the best mother anybody in this world could ask for: you give me everything I could ever want; you have raised me in a loving home; you done things for me that I may have not done for you. But mum, you can’t let go. You’re beautiful and I know dad has died, but you cannot die. You cannot give up this give in life. We are all just lost souls trying to find our way in this lonesome world.” I paused and sniffed, taking my other hand to wipe my tears away.
“If you give up, then the world has won.” My lips started to quiver as I closed my eyes and let out a whimper. I let go of her hand to cover my face and watched as her lifeless hand fell to the bed. I covered my face and wailed softly, my breathing rasped and my hands already becoming wet. Hyuk, she wouldn’t want to see you like this.
“Let’s make a deal. I’ll be strong if you will. I’ll try my best if you will.” I placed my hands in her hand and moulded it into an ‘A-OK’ sign.
“Okay, Hyukjae! I promise I will.” I raised my voices a few pitches higher to imitate her and laughed at myself, almost hearing her soft laughter with me. I wiped my tears away with the back of my hand and paused.
“Who did this to you? WHO DID THIS TO YOU?!” I shouted out while getting up from the chair, kicking it back so it hit the wall forcefully.
“AHHHHHH!” I screamed, crouching down with my head in my hands, tearing at my hair, my scalp, my skin. The scream turned into a loud, weak sob as I stayed in my position.
“H-H-Hyukjae?” I heard my mother’s croaked voice. “Is that you?” She coughed loudly. I got up quickly and ran to the bed, where she was lying with her eyes opened slightly.
“You’re awake!” I cried over and over hugging her softly. “Oh, mum, I’m so fucking happy you’re awake!”
“Hey! Don’t swear like that in front of me!” She hit my head weakly, still not loosing her sense on humour and I grabbed her hand to kiss it.
“How are you feeling?” I asked, fixing the chair so I could sit on it. “Don’t answer that. I’ll go get a nurse!” I fully grinned at her, gums and all, before running from the room.
“Hyuk...What are you -” Donghae asked, getting up from his seat abruptly.
“She’s awake!” I yelled and ran to the nurses’ desk, leaving a confused Donghae behind.
“My mother is awake!” The nurse looked at me confused. “Did you not hear me woman? My mother is awake!”
“Ms. Lee?”
“YES! Go! Go! Go!” I exclaimed much like an army commander, unable to stop grinning. The nurse informed other nurses and two left for the room and I followed behind them, rushing them.
“Hyuk!” Donghae said once I was in his sight. “She’s awake?”
“Yes!”
Donghae let out a sigh of relief and smiled. His mother pulled me into a tight hug and I gladly squeezed her body in return. Donghae pushed her off me and I hugged him, picking him up off the ground and spinning him around.
“I’m so happy for you, Eunhyuk!” His mother exclaimed and I grinned at her. Everything was going to be okay.
“Who do you think did it?” Donghae asked me as we lay in his bed, snuggling up to each other in bliss, knowing that my mother was safe and alive in the hospital, resting her body.
“I don’t know. But I intend to find out.”
“I heard that your mother is awake!” Leeteuk grinned as he saw me walk in and ran over to hold me. The rest followed suit.
“Didn’t we already do this yesterday?” I laughed as I pushed the last, who just so happened to be Kyuhyun again, off of me.
“Hi Kibum, how are you?”
“Mmm.” He mumbled and I was beyond caring anymore, deciding that he was an asshole. Why can’t he just be happy for once in his goddamn life? I shrugged it off before moving next to Sungmin who hugged me in his own way, more special than the others.
“I’m really glad, Hyukkie, I really am.” He whispered into my ear.
“So am I.” I smiled sweetly and he kissed me on the cheek before we both sat back down. “I just can’t understand who would do this.”
“Yeah, neither can I.” He said shortly after a few seconds before turning his back. I screwed up my face before turning to see what the others were talking about.
“He asked for my number.” Hankyung said.
“He asked for your number?” Shindong questioned.
“Yeah!”
“Why are you happy, Hannie? You already have a boyfriend!” Leeteuk put emphasis on the word boyfriend and Hankyung looked at him.
“That’s not relevant. And plus, Heechul isn’t my boyfriend!”
“Then what is he?” said Kangin who was holding Leeteuk.
“He is -” he started before they say before he caught the looks on their faces, “Shut up!”
The crew laughed and I laughed with them, even though I didn’t who they were talking about, before I saw Kibum still remain motionless, not even a smile on his face. What the fuck? This man is a rock?
Kibum briefly got up from the table and left the classroom, slamming the door behind him.
“What the fuck is up with him?” Kangin said, all of us watching the door.
“You just read my mind.” I answered him.
