“MUM!” I heard Eunhyuk shout as he looked down. My eyes followed his gaze; there was his mother, lying in a small pool of blood, clutching a knife which was lodged in her chest. Oh, shit. Eunhyuk fell to the ground beside her, taking her into his arms and started to cry desperately.
“MUM! MUM, NO! QUICKLY, CALL THE POLICE!” He shouted to me, tears streaming from his eyes. I quickly grabbed my phone from my back pocket and dialled the number.
“Emergency services, what is the nature of your emergency? Press one for the police, two for an ambulance, three if there is a fire -” The automated service said and I quickly pressed 2 on my handset and awaited the call assistant desperately.
“Hurry, Donghae! Mum, mum can you hear me? MUM!” Eunhyuk shouted to her while shaking her violently. “Mum, please no. Please don’t die. You can’t die...”
“Hello? How can I help you?
“I need an ambulance, quickly. My friend’s mother has been stabbed.” I quickly said before telling them the address and hanging up. Kneeling down next to Eunhyuk, I ran my fingers through his hair and reassured them the ambulance was on the way.
The wait was longer than expected.
It was all a blur, paramedics rushing in, placing the body on a stretcher, police clearing the area, telling us to move out the house, the stretcher being rushed out.
“WHY WON’T YOU LET ME COME? I AM HER SON! LET ME COME WITH YOU!” I heard Eunhyuk shout from where the ambulance was. “PLEASE! I’M BEGGING YOU.” He shouted, getting pushed back from numerous policemen. I ran across instinctively as if he was my boyfriend and I needed to protect him, shuddering at the thought of him being my boyfriend (but it wasn’t a bad shudder this time, it was a good one.).
“What is going on?” I asked one of the officers and he glanced briefly at me and recognized me.
“Will you please explain to him that he is too young to travel with the ambulance.” He stated before letting Eunhyuk go and the rest followed suit.
“Hyukkie, you can’t go with them.”
“And why not!” He shouted furiously.
“You are too young. It isn’t safe for your innocent eyes.” I said, cupping his cheek with my cold hand.
“But...But...My mother, Donghae. I need to go, I need to protect her. I wasn’t here to protect her and... And now she’s -”
“Shhhh. Don’t you DARE blame yourself for this.”
“I wasn’t here. I should’ve been here, but I wasn’t and....This is all my fault.”
“NOTHING is your fault. Please, don’t say that Eunhyuk.” I said with pleading eyes. I had heard this all before.
The ambulance drove away quickly, it’s sirens becoming a distant sound over the wind blaring my hearing. I hooked my arm over Eunhyuk’s shoulder, pulling him into my chest as he fought the tears back desperately, a single one slipping down momentarily before he swiped it away.
“Come on, they’ll want to question us now.” Eunhyuk nodded, his eyes closed and presumably blocking out the world.
I tried to focus on what the police officer was asking me, but my mind was everywhere, my scattered thoughts loosing coherency.
“When was she found?” The policeman in front of me asked.
“Um... About 2-3 hours ago, maybe?”
“And was she found in that position?”
“No. Eunhyuk was holding her.”
“Eunhyuk?”
“Him over there...” I said as I pointed to Eunhyuk who was being questioned by another officer.
“And he is the victim’s son, correct?”
“Yes.”
“Okay, I think that will do for now. We will call you to bring you in for further questioning.” Another officer walked to me and took down my details for this ‘further questioning’. I watched as the policeman stole the other who was questioning Eunhyuk. He looked over at me with worried eyes and I smiled sweetly at him, but his smile was very brief back as a tear fell from his eye. The officer glanced back at me before saying a brief word to the other, and then he walked over back to where I was standing.
“You live just next door, correct?”
“Yes...?” Where is this going?
“And you’re close to ‘Eunhyuk’?”
“Yes...?”
“I’m afraid that he will have to stay with your parents, as well as yourself, for the time being. A police officer has called them and they have agreed.”
“Really?” I was confused. Was Eunhyuk moving in with me? Eunhyuk is moving in with me?!
“Yes,” was all he said before he turned around to walk away.
“Is this all you need?” I asked Eunhyuk as we sat on his bed, his bag clutched tightly to his chest as he held his tears back.
“I’m only going next door.” He sniffled.
“I suppose... Are you okay?” I asked, pulling him into my embrace and rubbing his back, our fight completely forgotten about, the only things running through our minds was the terrible image of Eunhyuk’s mother.
“I’m fine.” He said before he stood from the bed quickly, “Come on, your parents will be wondering where we are.”
“Wait.” I grabbed his wrist and spun him around slowly, his body spinning gracefully as he fell into my arms. “Come here...” I whispered before gently placing my lips upon his lightly. “Don’t worry, everything will be alright.” He nodded before adding an ‘I hope so’ as we left the room, clicking off the light as we left.
“Mum, Dad, this is Eunhyuk.” I introduced him. He sniffled quietly before placing his hand out for them to shake, his bag in hanging from his other. My father simply looked down at his hand and shook it gently, his large hand almost covering Eunhyuk’s bony one.
“Hello. I understand you will be staying with us?” My father inquired and Eunhyuk nodded in response.
“Yes, sir, I hope that will not be a bother.” He took his hand away quickly and didn’t bother to hold his hand out to my mother, instead she did something else.
“Not at all, Eunhyuk, we are glad to have you here.” My mother said, pulling him into a small hug. Why are my parents so fucking...fake?
“Okay, we’ll be upstairs. Don’t call if you need something - find it yourself.” I said as I dragged Eunhyuk upstairs, almost hearing my father try to keep his temper down as we had company now. I kept firm hold of his hand as I took him into my room and closed the door. He looked around my room quietly as he still kept his bag clutched to his chest before he looked over at me, leaning against the door watching him.
“Your parents are pleasant.”
I scoffed at him, “Please, you don’t have to be nice.” Pushing my body off the door, I moved to the bed and took a set, patting the space next to me, urging Eunhyuk to sit.
“Make yourself at home.” I said as he sat next to me, loosening the tight grip on his bag slowly, before setting it down on the floor. He looked over to me with teary eyes before he rested his head on my shoulder. I put my head on top of his, placing a small kiss on his head as I stroked his head lovingly.
“Hae...What if...What if she’s gone?”
“Stop thinking about it Hyuk. Come on, let’s go to bed.” I said before awkwardly standing up. Do I have to change in front of him? Oh God, I really don’t want to get naked. I must’ve had some sort of readable look on my face as Eunhyuk laughed a little before saying, “I’ve already seen you naked. Stop stressing.” I laughed awkwardly before taking off my top, stretching out my body to remove it from my head. I looked down to find Eunhyuk gazing at my bare chest, his eyes glazed over.
“What?”
“What?”
“What?”
“What?”
“Oh, fuck off!” I laughed as I went to hit him with a pillow but he blocked it, stealing it from my grasp and chucking it at the door. He laughed with me, his eyes creasing as his worries lessened. I smiled at him as I unbuckled my jeans, slipping them off my legs easily before standing awkwardly.
“Are you getting changed?” I asked, nervous as to what I should do. He nodded before standing up and whipping off his clothes (similar to the full monty) then sat back down on the bed again, as if he didn’t move. His eyes were glistening, the tears forming again and I moved to lie down on the bed next to him, pulling his body out so he lay next to me, our bodies barely fitting on the small bed.
“Don’t cry. Everything is going to be alright.”
He nodded briefly but was unable to keep the tears back.
"Who did this to her?" The tears streamed down his face and he hid in face in the pillow.
"I don't know, Hyukjae, I don't know." I moved his head with my hands so he was looking at me.
“Stop. I’m going to cry now.” I laughed lightly, the tears already forming in my own eyes.
“Will she be okay, Donghae? What is she isn’t okay? What if...” He trailed off, unable to say the words.
“I’m sure she is fine. The doctors will take good care of her.” I reassured him though the tears continued to fall from his eyes. I kissed them lightly away and the room fell into silence, the only sound being the creaks the bed made when one of us moved.
“Don’t leave me.” He whispered, clinging onto my neck, his small fragile leg draping over mine as he found comfort.
“I won’t.”
“Promise me, Hae.”
“I promise you.”
