Summary: Your father told you not to give a woman of worth something as common as a rose.

When you were five, you watched your father bring home a bouquet of flowers for your mother every Saturday night after work. He brought home all kinds-daisies, lilacs, daffodils, orchids. By the age of seven, you thought you’ve seen enough flowers to last you a lifetime.

On one particular occasion, he brought you to the local flower shop, urging you to pick flowers for your mom. You pointed towards a beautiful bouquet of red roses, but he shook his head, advising you to pick something else.

“One thing you need to know Derek,” he says, after you’ve picked a bunch of fresh tulips, “is you do not give a woman who is special to you something common like the rose.”

Thirty years later, his words still rings true to you. You’ve been staring aimlessly at the colorful collection of flowers for the past half hour and you are nowhere close to deciding which one to give to Meredith.

“I need a bouquet of something… fresh. Romantic…” You tell an employee and she hands you a bouquet of peach and white roses.

“What about these? These are beautiful…”

“No. No roses please.” You say and she shrugs, in search of something else.

Your father was right. A woman who merits so much of your thoughts and your days deserve more than a bunch of roses, no matter how elegant or pretty they are. When you were with Addison, it was the only flower she adored-long-stemmed red roses for every occasion because she once said that daisies were for friendship and tulips were so blasé for someone who likes sophistication. With Meredith, no flower seemed to match her vibrant and complex personality.

The lady comes back bearing a bouquet of lilies, tulips and fresh lavender. You smile.

“Perfect. Just perfect.”
