So I began reading End of Poverty (refer to Lisa's LJ for more info) and it got me wondering; when western photographers/scholars go to countries knee-deep in poverty and disease to investigate the horrific extent of the inhumanity in those areas, do they actually bring some aid with them? When they say "This family has been without food for 3 days and the youngest kid has been suffering from fever caused by malaria for the entire last night", do they have or are they getting food or medicine for that family?
Common sense dictates no, but if someone has enough empathy and compassion to actually go to third world countries, how can that person just watch a family starve and do nothing but take pictures and write about how unbearable it is?
