Brain dump

Sep 22, 2006 15:15

This week I was rather confused by all the expressions of concern on my flist over a hamster, until I read the posts closely enough to realise this was actually a person. On the pulse of popular culture as always, me.

This week I was going to see the Pipettes, but then didn't as Hartland lost the tickets, and it was sold out. Instead we sat in the pub all night, fed and watered by his guilt, and we 'put the world to rights', as my mother would say. History, politics, television, the internets - all the important stuff covered. Probably as well we didn't get so far as to actually start drafting a letter to Niall Ferguson telling him he's a twat, though. Floor show was provided by a group of old people occasionally singing to themselves, and later on Dan and I were treated to a racist drunk lady giving our bus queue the 'benefit' of her opinions. Really unimpressed when she didn't actually need to get our bus, after 15 minutes of this. One foolhardy young man decided to take issue her - arguing with blind drunk self confessed racists with no logic (earth or any other variety) in their screeds really not worth doing, though I couldn't help but be impressed he tried. Does 'feeding the troll' apply out in the real world? A softly spoken chap with a foreign accent expressed his concern with her language (she treated 'fucking' as punctuation), and she turned on him demanding he go back to Poland if he didn't like it here, as 'I am English, everyone here is English'. I got as far as spinning round and opening my mouth before remembering I wasn't getting involved in this one.

Niall is turning up at some point this weekend, which is great. And we shall all be seeing Ryan Adams on Monday night, barring accidents. He still has 3 days to break something/get pickled and call off the gig, as has happened the last 2 years. I think we have used up all the gig bad luck for one week, but being a pessimist I'm sure there is some more out there just waiting for me.

Watched Low Winter Sun last night, which was rather well done but quite astonishingly nasty and downbeat. Z couldn't face spreading strawberry jam after watching it, given the many pints of blood that had graced the screen. We agreed she was well shot of Edinburgh, clearly all corrupt cops and murder. Has Neve McIntosh ever appeared in something not depressing and harsh? Bodies S2 has been sat on my hard drive for ever, as I was very impressed by the first season but never actually hit the right mood to deal with heading back into there. One for the list, I guess.

racist loons, gigs, tv, the pipettes
